I had to take a break from playing for awhile and haven't been up on all of the latest news ... But any chance of doing a Finally with the UA Tonestack and a defeat switch? HW would be the bomb!

I love my Finally, and have been kicking around the idea of an HW UA.

Put it into a larger enclosure and add a HPF/LPF for the be-all-end-all option. One pedal and you're set for your impromptu gig where you go straight into FOH.

Nathan's said that there is literally no more space in the Finally's enclosure to add more features.
He is working on one or two more DI designs that have more features in a larger enclosure, but I don't recall what all features they're planned to have...

A pre with DI and HPF would make me think hard about buying yet another pretty pedal I want but don't need. If it also had usable compression I'd buy it even if it didn't have a DI. If it also had active eq with at least 1 band of variable mids, I'd sell whatever I had to in order to rationalize buying one, as it'd easily replace 3 or 4 of my current boxes.

I've been tossing around my fancy D.I. design over the last few days, and I've been back and forth between Baxandall tonestack (like Slampegg and Lab Rat) and Fender tonestack (like UA). Maybe Baxandall with a mids control? I'm sure there will be opinions on both sides, I just want to find one that will keep at least most people happy.

Baxandall, preferably with a mids control, but even without a mids that is what I would prefer. Without a mids means one less knob.

I'd say that depends on the goal of the DI, your vision of how it should sound and perform and where it sits in the Sushi line-up. Personally I like a Fender style tone stack as some mid control is important to me. But if you can fit a Baxandall tone stack with additional mids (semi parametric even?) that might be more unique.
I say this because I think you will get a very mixed response, lot of fans of both styles.

I like the Fender tone stack, which is why I bought a UA, but a Baxandall without a mid knob (B-15/Slampegg) actually has more control over the mids than the Fender tone stack does.

Although I'm not invested in Sushi Box (yet), I've had better tone control with Baxandall tone stacks than with Fender. I can cut or boost mids with Baxandall. Fender only cuts.

I like busy bass lines, so I have no patience for fighting an inherent mid scoop.

In my experience, the Fender tonestack is more appropriate for guitar than bass. To me, scooped mids sound good on bass when soloing or practicing alone, but tend to get lost more easily in a band mix. A tonestack that is essentially flat when the tone controls are set at noon is easier for me to dial in.

But disclaimer: I've only had one very brief chance to check out a Fender tone stack, so it kinda doesn't count. I've thought about a UA since it was a Particle Accelerator with the LU tone stack, but every time I get close and think to myself "Yeah, maybe I should get a spot in the next month's orders" the design keeps changing, so I think to myself "Well, I better wait to see what the next improvement will be."

I was leaning Baxandall, looks like I'll continue gping that way. The current drawing sitting on my computer doesn't have a mids control, I'll take a look at it and see how much I like it. I personally like a Baxandall stack without a mids control, but I'm open to trying new things to see if I like them.

IMHO, both Fender and Bax front ends are primitive blunt instruments. Unless I have an active mid control (preferably variable) elsewhere in the chain, they just frustrate me. Anything without decently muscular mid control is a fail for me as a standalone pre/DI. I only use my current S-Box boxes in series with an active preamp further along the chain.

+1 for the Bax as I have plenty of fender tone stacks now. I do like having a mid control on most things though. Would there be a way to add a bypassable mid control or even a mid-voice switch? I know nothing about circuits for the record.

I'm still hoping for a Fender Bassman "Bass dude" 2 band flavor bax as that is my long time favorite.

Simply not a fan of the M'peg bax though I have tried and tried.

To my ear the UA is a beautiful sounding compromise that could be slightly improved with a variable mid band ~ but that is the reason I pair either my PA or UA with an Ictineo. A tube based Ictineo DI would be the MF bomb imho.
