The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I’m kinda kicking myself for not ordering a Finally instead of or in addition to the Slampegg I ordered for July. I’ve changed up my setup in a big way, and a Finally would be perfect for it now.

Oh well. That’s what I get for not planning ahead.
One of these days I'll get around to opening August ordering, just need to finalize what I'm doing. I'm 95% sure More will be available; Greenhouse will not be available; just need to decide how many slots I want to open and sit down to do it.

What are you going to recommend for powering the More? The same as your other two tube pedals (900mA @ 9vdc Warmup, 480mA @ 9vdc After Warmup)?

Yup, exactly that. You should be able to get by with an absolute minimum of 600mA, but I will always recommend getting as much as you can.

I might have missed it, but will the updated SS be open for ordering? I'm torn on getting a SS and selling my UA or keeping the UA and adding a Dr. Wattson to go with it.
It was available, but I temporarily stopped it. I have an updated design that I was comfortable with, but there were a couple reports of noise in the new units that I didn't have during my testing, so I put a hold on ordering for Smoke Signal until I can make sure there isn't going to be an issue. I have one of the affected units on the bench right now and I'm working through it, but I want to make sure it's 100% solid before making it available again.

There were a couple Smoke Signal orders that came in for July before I put Smoke Signal on hold, if I can get them running fine without the noise I will still ship them, but if they end up with similar issues to the one that's on the bench right now then I will reach out to the customers and make a decision on how to proceed.

I can see you are relatively new to Talkbass, so I’ll cut you a little slack. Your thinking is off, keep the UA, buy a Smoke Signal AND the Dr. Wattson.

Of course that is the correct choice! I almost added that to my post. I have an Ibanez TS10 Tube Screamer Classic I bought in 1990 and used for about 30 minutes that I could sell for enough to pay for a SS and a DrW. It's a lot easier to explain the package to the wife if I can say I sold another pedal for what these cost.

Ugh… I had a AnalogMan modded TS-10 I sold for like $75-100 years back. One of many sales I kick myself for in hindsight.

Interested in your thoughts. These two are the main options that I’m trying to decide between.
Well.
I've had a bit more time with both.
If you're looking for a sort of general preamp/dirty bass, with room for really high gain, definitely the SS.

If you're looking for a preamp that provides deep bottom, rich mids, and articulate highs, with the ability to get dirty, then the DW.

You can get both, from both, but I feel the DW overall was easier to dial in a favorable tone.

If possible, I'd suggest trying both (if/when possible) but, if that's not an option, and my initial take isn't enough, and you need more info, then ask, and I'll try to help further.

+1 on the DW.

Haven't tried the SS. Have had the Verellen Meatsmoke Pre. That box could knife through a mix. I'm guessing the SS could easily do the same.

I guess I'll probably open up August ordering this weekend, I will of course let everyone know.

I got a solid lead on the issues with Smoke Signal, and I have strong evidence that it's caused by the power supply for the recording output. The main preamp is all tube signal path so it uses the high-voltage supply, but the recording output uses solid-state active filters; the op-amps are run at 24V which is fed from a separate power supply that steps from 9V to 24V. The noise seems to be interference from this 24V supply leaking into the high-voltage supply, and so far (further testing is needed, I found this just before midnight last night) it looks like it can be resolved by removing the recording output circuit. I'll determine what that means for the future of the Smoke Signal when I have a solid confirmation that this is the problem and how to fix it.

I know some people have said they like the recording output, but it sounds like most wouldn't be too upset if it were removed. If I can get rid of it and solve some problems, I would definitely be open to adding new features to replace it.

I wouldn't care if the recording output on the SS went away. With audio interfaces so cheap it is a convenient but unnecessary feature IMO, especially if it is causing the noise issue.
+1. I don't have a Smoke Signal, but the cab sim market has changed drastically since the original Meatsmoke preamp circuit was developed. Losing the recording output wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, if it means cleaning up a source of potential (or actual) noise.

Based on a minimal introductory period (with the HW Dr. Wattson), the Smoke Signal and Dr. Wattson cover very different territory. Put simplistically, Smoke Signal range of gain = 20% clean/80% distorted, subtle to extreme. Dr. Wattson range of gain = 80% clean, 20% distorted, maxing out at moderate OD. The Dr. Wattson offers extremely useful, widely variable EQ, coupled with a thick, harmonically rich, multi-dimensional clean tubey tone. The Dr.'s Overdrive is quite pleasant, and I can't wait to see how it blooms when I slam the input. I plan on making some demo's this weekend.

But that Lab Rat, it keeps seducing me repeatedly with the sounds it makes, and the way it feels to play it.

So here's the $64k question: does the DW & the LR play nice together? :D

I haven't yet had the opportunity to try this combo out.
