The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Not being an electronics guy, so I'm going out on a limb here,

Could you feasibly use a MOSFET or opamp to take place of that 3rd gain stage?
The beauty and charm of @Sushi Box FX is the use of TUBE stages where nearly every other pedal and many amp makers do use FET, MOSFET, opamps, modeling or other technology to mimic the unique character of TUBES, would sorta defeat the whole purpose.

I'm not saying he go full FET.

What I'm saying, is if he were to do a DW in a small enclosure, he'd have to give up the second tube.
Each tube has 2 gain stages (according to señor Sushi)
The DW uses 3 (of 4) of those available gain stages with the 2 tubes in the DW.

In a small enclosure, there would only be 1 tube and 2 gain stages available.
I'm suggesting a use of MOSFET
IN ADDITION TO the tube gain stages already in use.
A "hybrid" design.

That's exactly it ;) I added a couple extra pots that are attached to the DSP chip so I can play around with other things while I've got it in there. The real purpose of Gondwana mini is for me to have a platform to play with the IR loader capabilities and see what I can come up with before committing to a behemoth with a dozen tubes and a thousand features.
So what features/things do you plan to test with this Mini version?

It's possible, but personally I would rather put it as the first stage. There is a lot of benefit from having a tube first stage, but personally I think there is more benefit from having a tube final stage, so it would essentially be like putting a solid-state boost in front of a tube amp. Doable, probably wouldn't sound bad, but I think it would take some work to get it to sound the same as the original DW.

And I'm not committing to doing a single-tube DW design, but if I did then Elementary absolutely wins the naming contest.

Nope, you're fine. I was jamming with a Black Eye straight into an amp right before a 5-day vacation, when it was time to leave I turned off the amp but forgot to unplug the Black Eye, so it was on for 5 days straight. No problems, still runs and sounds great. I think 5 days is probably my record for longest consecutive on time, but there really shouldn't be any problem leaving it on for a week or so, just bear in mind that's going to count against tube life.

Follow up question,

The FMV tone stack is passive, is the Hiwatt tone stack passive as well?
Yessir. Active tonestacks generally refers to putting a filter in the feedback loop of an op-amp; tube stages don't have feedback loops so there's really no (easy) way to do that, so every tonestack in every preamp I make and literally every tube preamp (including full amps) I've ever seen is passive.

So what features/things do you plan to test with this Mini version?

The DSP chip I'm using for the IR bit has a fair amount of horsepower so it can actually run other effects at the same time as the IR. I'm going to try a few of the ones that are built-in, like compression and LPF/HPF, to see how useful they would be.

I'll have to ask: What exactly is consuming a tube? I think I read somewhere that it's the actual 'work' and not by idling in warmed up state ?

I would assume it is similar to a light bulb, but not quite as extreme, in that any time a tube is powered up it is using up "cycle time". Perhaps (because I have no idea) cycle time is used faster when "work" is being done, but nonetheless even idle is consuming cycle time of the tube.

Luckily my wife understands more than most as she is also a musician and gets different guitars, amps, effects really do sound well .... different.

So the answer is of course "it depends".

Tubes life expectancy refers to active time, which means time when the tube is not on standby but is actively amplifying signal. The tricky part there is that in a pedal your tubes are technically amplifying whether the pedal is active or not. Even if there isn't any input, the tubes are still amplifying whatever space noise is floating around on the lines. There is no standby mode on (most) tube pedals, so if power is plugged in then the clock is running on your tubes.

....but if you set a tube that amplifies white noise at full capacity side by side with a tube that amplifies the ground noise of an active line without real signal and let them run 24/7, the former would give in a lot earlier than the latter, yes?
 
I apologize if this has been discussed in the past, but I couldn't find anything when I searched.

I have a Dr W pedal on order and want to be sure I use the correct power supply. I have own 9 volt versions but no 12 volt versions. Is there something specific I can look for in a 12 volt power supply? Or if a 9 volt supply will work fine, is there a particular model that users have had the best results with?
