What is the difference in sound between SMD and HW?

At home, through headphones, there’s a definite difference. The HW sounds a little bigger and fuller.

In a live mix, through the PA with drums, guitars, keys, and vocals, the difference isn’t really noticeable. Even in my IEMS, playing live, there isn’t really much of a difference between the two.

I know this goes against the general consensus that HW is so much better, but I’d say it depends on your use—at home or maybe for recording, I’d agree it’s maybe worth the extra money. But for live use, the difference is probably there, but for me, not noticeable enough to spend the extra over SMD. And the only thing that *I* personally care about is live use. So moving forward, I’ll happily stick with SMD versions if still available.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate honest reviews. I still have SMD pedals on my board that I'm not in a hurry to replace. People like the HW versions so I'll continue to make them as long as there is demand, but the SMD versions are a lot less work for me both in design and assembly.

Mathematically it's a little more than 1MΩ, but for all intents and purposes call it 1MΩ.

Theoretically, the only difference between SMD and HW should be the higher voltage that HW is able to run at. As with many things in life and science, real world things like what the human ear perceives as "tone"is hard to nail down. I bought a HW UA, and I absolutely love it, but from here out I will probably buy SMD.

Looks like a solid setup! I'm not officially affiliated with Lightning Boy, but I love his products and I've found that my stuff works great with his stuff. Can't say enough good about Lightning Boy.

It's definitely a boost, unity gain is around 10 o'clock if I remember right. Let me see if I can do some math for actual gain level.

I'll have to ask: What exactly is consuming a tube? I think I read somewhere that it's the actual 'work' and not by idling in warmed up state ?

I once read that over the long-term life of a tube, the coating on the cathode slowly strips away, reducing the amount of electrons produced and weakening the overall amplification ability of the tube... that coating very slowly depletes whenever voltage is applied to the cathode, regardless of if it's actually receiving any input or not.
No idea if it's true! It's just one of the things that I've heard is supposedly responsible for tubes not being able to run forever.

That's a game winning combination! The UA rocks, and the LBA TI box adds extra mojo and is great in the studio and live use!

Yeah. Surprising how good such a simple setup sounds in the right situation. Really happy with the Undeeground Accelerator and the TI box. Boss tuner? It’s ok. Tricky to get it to track a low B and the center “in tune” light is so bright that if I’m off a few cents I can’t see the lights next to it. I’ll keep it though.
