The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Oh that name! It keeps popping up! Dr. Wattson here, Dr. Wattson there. Everybody and their Mother seems to have one by now.

Here's my problem, though:

IMHO the optimal pedal for what you seek will be hard to find...but if you could locate a Broughton RFE and swap it for your HPF/LPF you'd have exactly the same board geography and flavour with the added sweepable mid boost/.

Not really. The HPF/LPF is last in chain before the Noble and an always on pedal.
The Ictineo is in a loop of the Morningstar ML5 (last pedal before comp) and I'll activate and deactivate it with different patches.
 
Naive electrical engineering question: Is that a general property of tone stacks? That is, does the introduction of a tone stack in an amplifying circuit necessarily decrease the signal/noise ratio?
In a passive tone stack (aka one that can only "cut")? Yes.
Here's another way to look at it: from a circuit design perspective, passive tone stacks are also called "filters"... do you know of any filters that add more substances to whatever they're filtering?

Short answer, yes. Tone stacks inherently have gain of less than one, which means the signal coming out is less than the signal coming in. In solid state circuits you can put your filter circuit into the feedback loop of an opamp and create an "active tone control", but tubes don't have feedback loops so your only option is to have a "makeup gain stage" before or after to compensate for the loss in level.

Thanks! the gain < 1 is what was troubling me. @JackFawkes's point about filters made sense, but I was wondering about tonestacks in general, even when set flat yet still in the circuit.

I'm far from an expert, so I could be quite wrong; but with a passive tone stack, no matter how it is voiced, its insertion will always incur some kind of cost to the overall signal strength (usually 10-20dB worth). That's why there's a volume boost on the new UA when you hit the switch to bypass the tone stack, even if you have that tone stack dialed in "flat".
Some designs do lose less than others though; the passive James/Baxandall stack might be one of those that loses less, but don't quote me on that.

EDIT: Yeah, hope you didn't quote me on that, the passive E.J. James stack has about 20dB of insertion loss; the original Baxandall doesn't technically have any insertion loss, but that's just because it's essentially an active version of a James tone stack...

EDIT 2: Actually, while the original hi-fi iteration of the James stack has an insertion loss of about 20dB, you can get your losses down to only 7-8dB if you optimize the component values specifically for use with just guitar or bass; so my original recollection wasn't completely off!

I learned the hard way that every component, connection and minute detail makes some cumulative difference once you actually take the time to either take an engineering measurement or calculation or critical examination or listen. Once you start down that path many become both more attuned and often obsessed with the minutia. That is the paradox and the never ending black hole that feeds our GAS often times. Sometimes it is good to get back to basics and play acoustic or as stripped down as possible.

Got the HW UA today. Pretty sweet pedal. Been playing around with it to see how it acts and so far I'm impressed. The most interesting thing is the Tonestack Bypass switch. I wasn't expecting that. I also notice that the pedal is significantly louder when the tone stack is bypassed, like almost twice as loud. This thing drives my Straight Ahead power amp very very nicely. In all honesty that amp has never sounded better. Makes me realize everything I've driven it with before seems sort of anemic by comparison, plus the tube gives it just that little something that it was always missing.

Is it essentially a Space Heater with the tone stack is bypassed? Either way I like it. I'm also afraid to put velcro on it because the bottom looks so nice and I don't want to mess up the print.

Which power amp are you running your UA into?
 

That’s the one! In all honesty, when I first got it I liked it, but thought it was a bit too clean and sort of anemic. Then I realized two things.

1. I wasn’t giving it enough to power from my preamp.
2. A little tube goodness completely changed how I feel about that Straight Ahead amp.

I just might use it this weekend and see if I feel the same with it on a stage.

I've never heard of these. You mean to tell me this is just power, and can sufficiently push a cab

Oh yeah! For sure it’ll push a cab. It’s 500W @4ohm and 300ish @8ohm. It’s basically a stripped down power section of an amplifier. About the same size as a Warwick Gnome or Trace Elliot Elf, but with more power and gets pretty loud.

Here’s a pic of it next to some pedals and my Felix for scale.
