The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

almost done (just waiting a couple of days for a few parts that i didn't have in stock). Acid etched enclosure with relayed true bypass:

Seriously, that etch is top notch, looks gorgeous. I got my very first CNC machine because I couldn't get the hang of acid etching :P

Looks good!

Almost finished with mine too. Didn’t realize I ran out of Lumberg 1/4” jacks. So I threw in a quick order to BLMS, so I’ll probably get it finished Thursday or Friday.
To be honest, I almost feel like this pedal doesn’t really need an bypass switch because I can’t ever see myself bypassing this thing.
i agree, but for me it's always nice to quickly compare what it's doing to being on or off. it's also a good way to set it at unity gain.

what did you use for your resist? That’s a super clean etch. Also, do you use ferric chloride or a muriatic acid/peroxide variation?
thanks! i use acid magic.

any luck getting those tube swap videos up? i opened my finally up and i gave the tube a tug, its pretty good and in there and said to myself "NOPE! dont risk it!"
Ah crap, forgot. Let me see if I can get them up today. I was originally planning to go in and re-record the audio and dub it over so it wasn't just my phone camera audio, but something is better than nothing.

I suppose for the time being you could always upload the video on YouTube, keep it private so it does not appear on your channel, and provide a link for us here :hyper:

It's taken a while, but I think I've Finally made up my mind that I need a tube DI. I really like the ability of the Finally to pass an effected signal through. Now my only question is: Handwired vs SMD? I've read several descriptions that the HW is bigger, or thiccer sounding than the SMD due to running the tube at higher voltage. If I am looking for something to provide some optional warmth to a clean preamp, in addition to having a great DI sound, would the SMD be sufficient, or would my use case benefit from HW?

I have not tried SMD Finally (I have HW one). I have compared SMD Slampegg to HW Slampegg. My general feeling is that if you do not have the two to compare next to each other, you would not know you were missing anything. If you have the two next to each other, they definitely sound slightly different. Point being, SMD is definitely sufficient. This is also in line with what others have said in this thread about SMD v HW.

I completely agree with @ahadl2500 on the difference between SMD vs HW. I have an SMD Finally that is now my favorite DI in my collection that includes a number of industry standards : Countryman Type 85, RNDI, Radial JDI and several others. I have also been able to compare the HW Underground Accelerator with the SMD and concur that side by side you might notice some differences, not necessarily improvements but there are subtle nuances.

IMHO better to pair your Finally with a preamp for powerful tone delivery, if you can afford to go HW then Rock With It but there is no real shame or loss going with SMD.

^^^^^^^I concur. I have 2 UAs, 1 SMD and 1 HW. The difference is subtle, but real. Which way to go is a personal decision based on one's cash flow. If the extra few rubles is just background noise in your budget, then HW all the way for the win. If the extra dead presidents will mean passing on an enjoyable bite/brew out, then I'd happily go SMD and enjoy a few hours out with zero regrets.....no wrong answers here.

On an unrelated note, after having had quite a bit of time to groove to my new HW Slampegg X pre, I am pleasantly surprised by how different a flavour it provides as compared to the UA and SH. All keepers ;)

I went back and watched the recordings I had made, the audio actually isn't too bad. I'm going to go ahead and upload the videos as-is. I did three different videos where I show how I swap tubes in a HWDW, HWSH, and HW Finally. Between the three I think it shows the technique I use pretty well. I'm still at work so I'm uploading over mobile and it will take a little while, but I'll post links here when they go live.

Fresh Sushi, Pizza and Benny a few of my favorite things.
Handwired Underground Accelerator
We've had Benny 3 years rescued from the CTSPCA originally a very sick kitten from a hording situation, he was found in a bird cage in a mobile home with over 100 other sick and neglected animals. He is the most unique cat I've ever known.
I had a Benny for 15 years in my life, it was a dog with a very unique personality. Missing him terribly, for over a year now. I hope you get to enjoy the company of your friend for a long long time!!

The waiting game is killing me.
My HWUA has left the US on Aug 4th and has hit German customs on the same day.
Tracking update Aug 5th (morning): Held in customs.
Tracking update Aug 5th (noon): En route to the destination.
Tracking update Aug 6th(morning): Held in customs.
Tracking update Aug 6th(noon): Underground Accelerator going dark. Over and Out.

Nothing has happened since.
I know from past experiences that most likely, the mailman will show up and bring me a much anticipated Sushi Box in exchange for the customs fee - before the tracking updates again - but this period has taken 1-10 days in the past and I loathe every second of it.

thanks for listening.
