I borrowed my buddies' new BE2 and I'm wondering if it's supposed to sound like this or if there's something wrong with it (audio file below). He said to him it sounds much more like a fuzz and I'm thinking I agree. He also has the original Black Eye and says this is way different to him.
I've got it running with pretty much every knob around noon. Gain is a bit less than noon. Nothing else is in the chain besides a capture of my amp and a cab block (quad cortex)

I just double-checked with one of my units with all knobs at noon, and that sounds about right. Black Eye II is going to feel heavier than the original because I've widened the frequency response of the circuit so instead of just amplifying the upper register and cutting the lows, you're amplifying the whole spectrum, so you're going to get distortion at frequencies you weren't even hearing before. The result is a thick, chunky distortion that indeed flirts with fuzz territory.
That is what mine sounds like too, and I love it. First song I played with it was "Should I Stay or Should I Go".
Never tried a glowplug myself, but I know there's a handful of folks here that like it.
I don't know if all are the same in that regard, but the Glowplug I tested was the best device I could find to faithfully introduce 100% analog tube noise into the signal chain.
Any benefits it might have had were grossly overshadowed by the noise floor. I returned it the day after I got it.

Mmkay, after staring at it for a couple weeks I finally found the problem with my new JC Emerald prototype and got it fired up last night. I need to get it boxed up and do some real testing with it aside from 2AM noodling, but first impressions are that it sounds excellent. My Bright and Deep switches are giving exactly the results I wanted them to, and I'm incredibly pleased with it so far. Too late to get them in for the December batch, but you should definitely expect to see these soon.
I really like mine and there isn't a noise issue, but the form factor, side jacks and 15v power supply are reasons why it's not on my current board. I've never tried a SH but I'd like to.
It's a cool pedal.

You'll definitely find some good tones! For my UA I like the 12AX7 with the tone stack and the 12AT7 with the tone stack bypassed. Weird right? I think it's because I like bumping up the gain with the 12AT7 and keep the volume down, but sort of do the opposite with the 12AX7 and the tone stack combination.
