The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Alright, I tried the mod I was thinking about. I wanted to raise the output level of Slampegg without affecting the overall tone, and it didn't really work. I know PA and LU can push a power amp no problem, and I thought it would be nice for Slampegg to do the same.

So here's a question for Slampegg owners/those that have tried a Slampegg: would you be willing to sacrifice a little gain to get a louder output? It would technically be less true to the original, but would still very much have the Ampeg flavor.

Would it be possible to add a switch, etc for a Low Gain/Hi Gain voicing to compensate for the Gain reduction to make the output higher?

Alas there is no more room for switches :P it would have to be an internal switch if anything, pop open the back cover and flip the switch then put it back on.

Will one situation be cleaner and one breakup faster correct? more gain, less headroom?

what about an internal switch with a “hole” or something in the back that you can adjust it without having to open it? I have seen some pedals with internal trim pots that can be adjusted with small holes drilled on the back of the enclosures so you can stick a small screw driver through it to adjust.

More or less. Right now it has a pretty good amount of gain and can get hairy, but not a lot of headroom so a low output volume. I want to try increasing the headroom on the second stage, so the first stage will still get hairy like normal, but the overall output will be louder. This means the second stage won't contribute as much to the drive, but it will still be Ampeg voiced.

I've got no issues with the way it is now, but I will say that in my setup, I start getting breakup at like 10-11 o'clock. If you're saying that breakup will still sound just as sweet, but happen closer to 2-3 o'clock, then I think that's great too - would just give more clean-ish gain range. I'm running mine always-on....I'm guessing if anyone had a problem with what you're suggesting, it'd be the people that are using it as an OD and running it really dirty......or people sending it a lower signal that wouldn't be able to get it to drive at all with higher headroom.

Yes because I'm going to put it direct into a power amp.

Been mucking around with my PA today being fed by my LA-1A, into my Berg IP310. A/B ing with my M81/Fairfield Modele B/Becos CompIQ combo, trying to get the later, to sound as thick and hefty. I can get close, but as soon as you get up into the higher registers there is thickness with the notes you just can't get without tubes. Much the same as comparing a tube amp to class D.
