The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Alright, I tried the mod I was thinking about. I wanted to raise the output level of Slampegg without affecting the overall tone, and it didn't really work. I know PA and LU can push a power amp no problem, and I thought it would be nice for Slampegg to do the same.

So here's a question for Slampegg owners/those that have tried a Slampegg: would you be willing to sacrifice a little gain to get a louder output? It would technically be less true to the original, but would still very much have the Ampeg flavor.

I have not played through one but have one on order with you. I'd rather have the gain available than an increased output. That's the main reason that I'm interested in it.

Nah, I think you guys might have it backwards. I see feet in pedalboard photos all the time... I thought the rule on Talkbass was that you HAVE to include feet? :D

@Rocksolid - nice mini boards, feet or not. lol I'm going to go google some of those mini pedals. I'm assuming that's a tuner between the Becos and Mooer? What's the make/model on that one?

5sg.
It's a Pedal Train SST (space saving tuner) It does the job, but not in the league of a pedal IMO.

By the way, in case anyone was wondering, my London Underground plays nicely with fuzz pedals:

More expensive than brand new...that one might last longer than 11 minutes :)
It might sit but it's only $10 (plus tax) more than a new one and you don't have to wait 5 months to get it.

I'm all about supporting Nathan but it's not that much more in the grand scheme of things.

Edit: Now it's gone.

As another cat with the Slampegg on order (and thus technically not who you're asking :p:whistle:), I'm also looking to abuse the gain heavily, and would take that over extra headroom.

My ilk are probably in the minority, but I'm not nearly enough of a purist to want to bypass my Quilter's preamp stage (i.e. drive the power amp directly), and in fact I somewhat obsessively keep my level as close to unity as possible throughout the signal chain before hitting the head, save for deliberate things like punching a pedal's input gain.

This is a small preference, mind you; I can boost my Particle Accelerator into Thunderdome territory and doubtless could follow suit on a Slampegg that's gainstaged similarly.

Hey John that’s good to hear! Where do you run yours in your signal chain? Towards the end I assume? Do you have anything after the LU?

thanks for sharing.
i generally run it last in the chain. if i'm using a compessor i might run the comp last.

I like all 3 Slampegg switches. The middle one didn't seem to do anything soloed, but sometimes in a mix it makes me pop out. It does something, right? It's not just a placebo effect I'm hearing? Anyway, I wouldn't change a thing about the pedal. I play clean but maybe the gain will come in handy down the road.

That sounds like a fun pedal idea...
"Placebo Effect" - it is a 1590 covered in SPST toggle switches (like 40 of them), all wired to a PCB.
Some of them do absolutely nothing.
Others actually change the tone.
One of them activates bypass.
And they're randomly mounted related to their toggle direction. Some have up as on, some you flip left.

As long as it has a tube in it, it’ll sell. :smug:

Yeah, I’ve tried hard to hear a difference with the brightness switch too. I got to play it last week through a good IEM system (and my 5 driver IEMs).....still couldn’t hear anything. I’m sure it’s in the audio path - I can hear it pop when I switch it....must be doing something, I just can’t tell what.

I think it’s going to be that switch I flip when someone tells me the bass is too loud. “Oh, ok, I’ll turn the bright switch on - that’ll tame it down for you.”

The producer switch. Brilliant.

We used to have a fader on our church soundboard labeled Master Volume. It did absolutely nothing, it was actually an input channel with nothing plugged into it.
Anytime someone complained about volume, we visibly lowered that fader and asked if it was better. It either always was, or after the second 'lowering' it was :roflmao:
(And yes, we kept an SPL meter around and kept it ~85-90; it was not overly loud even in direct line of the tweeters)

On paper it looks like a reasonable difference. So you have the grid stopper resitor, basically the input resistor to the first stage. With Bright off it's 47k straight in, with Bright on it goes to 100k with a 4.7nF capacitor in parallel. But apparently that just isn't an audible difference?

So I could add all the little DIP switches to the top of the box like Chase Bliss and have some Placebo switches to wow your friends and pacify incompetent soundguys, but I'm thinking Bright switch is getting the boot, at least for the X Series.
