The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Kudos to @TonyP- and @Sushi Box FX for persevering through the design & prototyping phases, I know how taxing that process can be. I am confident that their perfectionist perseverance will be a pleasure to us all.

FWIW the JC Emerald continues to be a sonic powerhouse. I await a surprise package from SB.

Cabsim is on both the 1/4" and the XLR output. I know it would be cool to do fancy routing so you could have it on one and not the other, but this wasn't set up for that and that would add another layer of complication.

Dry is parallel off the input, no EQ/boost/etc.

The 1/4" Output is the one going to my amp, right? So I will be running a CabSim into my amp that does have a real cab itself? Why would I want to do that?

I thought it was mentioned that the Venus X is designed to be an "amp in a box" so I *think* that means that the design is intended for use where an amp is not used. However, since the cabsim can be disabled, you should be able to run it to the FoH and your amp with no issues.

Also, your ear will have to be the ultimate judge, but running to your amp with the cabsim on *might* be fine. I would also further add that if you are always using an amp, then perhaps the cabsim will be more useful to you when recording direct.

I wanted to share a couple builds someone made from the DIY Particle Accelerator boards I have available. One uses a pre-milled enclosure I provided (the one with slots for ventilation) and the other has hand-drilled holes. This guy lives 20 minutes from me and I typically deliver boards in person when he orders them from me. Super cool guy, does very cool work.

Gotta say (several posts later), that these look AWESOME.

As usual, especially in live sound, there is a lot of gray area and compromise to be dealt with. Basically, you have the following scenarios:

1. You're recording direct, no amp, use the CabSim
2. You're using in-ears live, no amp, use the CabSim
3. You're playing live, using your amp to carry the room, no CabSim
4. Your playing live, amp as monitor, FOH is carrying the room, use the CabSim for FOH and maybe have a compromise in your stage sound, or don't use it and let the sound guy worry about it.

And this doesn't take into account the Dry output, which opens other routing options.

Depending on how the CabSim is voiced, it may be a non-issue. Maybe it blends with the sound of your cab anyway, maybe you like the voicing as a base tone and leave it on.

All in all, I think this is a great approach. I can't wait to hear it.

One more question for @Sushi Box FX, is the boost similar to a built in Space Heater? or is it something else?

You might want to run a cabSim if you show up somewhere, and their backline is real HiFi and you dont like it being so sterile. I've seen guys use the cabsim on some pedals that mimic the 15" cab then push that through a modern setup. A switch that can help you go from thumpy b15 sound to modern (no cabsim) could be handy in this way too.

On the big board, I use a Broughton RFE as sort of a combo cabsim/room fixer, running one of three preamps (UA, DW, or SVPre), into the fx return of a TH700, and a Barefaced BB3. The BB3 is so flat that it doesn't sound much like a cab, so benefits from a bit of sculpting. Also sounds great in ears.

I could see a cab sim coming in handy here, especially for @TonyP-'s intended purpose of an amp-in-a-box.

yeah I'm a bit eager for a demo. Are we gonna get a video/Soundcloud clip in a couple weeks?
I'll get something as soon as I can, but I'll barely have circuit boards in hand in a week, so between getting one built up and getting it over to Tony it may be a little while. I could probably get some VERY preliminary soundclips (again, I'm a hack of a bassist) recorded, but it would still be a bit of a wait.

Dont rush it. Perhaps "eager" isn't the right word. It tends to have the connotation that speediness is necessary. IMHO, good things are often worth the wait. So.... "I'm looking forward to" soundclips. Perhaps @TonyP- wont mind showing off the final version.

Putting this new @Sushi Box FX Bass Dude pedal in the exclusive Raw Dawg finish through the paces. This is based on the 60-70's Bassman amp channel. So far it is exactly what I hoped for as it is one of my favorite amps, I've had a '68 Bassman for over 40 years. My Bassman is a transition model with 66-67 'black face' part dates and a 68 'silver face' panel.
We can hope this gets added to the SB line up soon.

First impressions of the Dreamcatcher:

Too gorgeous to step on. That Dirty Magic, I said got dang. What a beauty.

The red channel is murder. Should've called this pedal the Dream Crusher. So wonderfully thick and heavy. Love it.

Curious of a tube swap to get a wider range of gain. My setup basically has the red channel gain with three options: a lil blue channel lite, a lil classic tube farty, and then most of the knob is intoxicating massive doom that I want to leave doomy. But I'd hate to swap tubes if it's going to neuter the doom at all. Such a mean tone with the stock tubes.

Oddly, though, when hooked up to the rest of the board it was the blue channel that dominated. Tube Screamer with a blend knob (or in a parallel blend pedal) into the blue channel set mostly clean is gigantic. I've never been this happy with my fuzz pedal, either, and I already loved that thing (Mountainking Megalith clone). Then I ran the drive and fuzz parallel and with a clean blend. It was then, I experienced true tonal joy.... and a bass tone so evil I'll soon be unemployable by most working bands. Ha ha, worth it!

All your pedal parties need a Sushi snack.

Very cool.

FMV stack I'm assuming,
How's it compare to the UA?

I’m intrigued right now with the Elementary. I have a UA and it will likely never leave the board, but the idea of a clean and dirty channel to switch between sounds really good. Says it is based off the old Hiwatt. Can anyone give a comparison with the UA?
I love the warm subtle grind with the UA but am looking at other pedals for a heavier overdrive when needed. Maybe Elementary dirty channel could give me that.

I believe it is the FMV stack and the UA has a different texture. I will do a report soon comparing the Bass Dude to the other preamps in my Sushi Box FX menagerie.
My first impression id that the 2 tube preamps have an unfair advantage over single tubes even my HWUA. There is an openness that is very nice.

Very Nice I Like Borat.jpg
