That’s what I’ve heard. Just trying to get a good representation of the two flavors (three with the bypass). Unfortunately I can see myself keeping both

yes they both sound excellent in front of it, but the WD already has a tube pre….I’d lean much more towards the UA in front of it.

Are the Low and High EQ controls shelving type, centered around 80hz/5khz, in the style of HPF/LPF , or something else? Curious whether I'll want to keep an HPF/LPF in line with it.

Not exactly, while they are shelving controls they don't have an exact center as the controls are interactive. A true HPF/LPF those frequencies are fixed or variable and have very steep cuts
I wanted to share a couple builds someone made from the DIY Particle Accelerator boards I have available. One uses a pre-milled enclosure I provided (the one with slots for ventilation) and the other has hand-drilled holes. This guy lives 20 minutes from me and I typically deliver boards in person when he orders them from me. Super cool guy, does very cool work.
Python and Dragon are both very nice. Etched boxes are so sexy.
I have had nice results with a UA and other boxes, driving a re/Q at the end of the chain.
The UA's eq uses a FMV (Fender, Marshall, Vox) tone stack eq, not a shelving eq. Bass and treble are boost and mid is cut. This means bass and treble are flat when they are at 0 and are boosted when you turn up the dials. Mid is flat when it's at 10 and cuts when turned down. Bass and treble can't be cut, so you'll probably want to keep your H/LPF handy.
Anyone use a Slampegg bee or Dr Watson direct to a Power amp? I am getting a Straight Ahead power amp and looking to get a preamp to pair with it.

The one tube pedals aren't enough.
I find an HPF makes an enormous positive difference in line with the passive Fender tone stack on the UA and Dreamcatcher. Go to the guitar science web site and mess with the Fender 3 band simulator. You will see that flat is 0-10-0 (lo-mid-hi). You cannot boost mids and when you boost both lows and highs it results in an unavoidable mid scoop BUT with an HPF you can goose the lows enough to get a very effective low mid boost while using the hpf to eliminate the boom that would otherwise go along with it. This is a saviour when running the pedals directly into a power amp, but obviously much less critical if running them into a head with its' own active mid boost. For me, a scooped eq is almost never where I want to be. YMMV.
Either one works? I was thinking I can also put the pre into a compressor first then the power amp to boost gain.

With the single tube pedals I would add a glass butterfly or more, but a compressor could work too. I love the tone I get with my UA into the GB.
