The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

My roommate just plugged his skinny string jaguar into my recording/ home pedalboard and wow it sounded great.

Ok, gotta guy that doesn’t believe Mr Sushi put a More pedal inside a bass. Does anyone remember what page that was on?
It's not going to be super soon, but I'm planning to replace that body with a nicer one and put an Underground Accelerator inside it. I like having the Space Heater in it, but I would like to have an onboard tonestack.

The guy I was talking to online about it makes guitar and bass pickups, Home - Carondelet Pickups, and I said we need to get you two together to figure out how to make a tube based guitar/bass pickup.
Why? Why not

@Sushi Box FX -- You could use this as a prototype to make a "loaded pickguard." Of course you'd have to send routing templates with the PG, but I could see the active sire basses being easy to adapt to this since at least mine has 18v. mmmm... 4 knob jazz with Vol Vol TUBE(MORE) Tone.
18V doesn't really help that much, the tricky thing is the absurd amount of current a tube circuit pulls. A typical 9V battery will be sucked dry in 2-3 hours. That's why I use the rechargeable pack routed into the back of the bass, so I can get 8-ish hours of playtime between recharges.

Seeing that was one of the main reasons I wanted to try this. I didn't like some of the things I saw in theirs (external power supply that the preamp needs in order to function instead of internal, orange LED to exaggerate tube glow) and thought "it wouldn't be that hard to build a self-contained system that would also have a superior preamp, and all for way less than $6k".

My main rationale against their system is that if you have to plug your bass/guitar into a box on the floor that has a power supply in it in order for your tube preamp to work, what benefit does that give over just using a tube preamp pedal? If you're going to build a tube preamp into a bass it should be at least close to as convenient as using any other onboard preamp.

Just my opinion.
 
Apparently the Valvebucker-thread died immediately when I tried to participate. Here’s the cause of death:

IIRC, the principle behind the valvebucker pickup is the same as in a tube condenser microphone (or an active pickup). They use a low amount of windings in the coil so that the frequency response and the dynamic sensitivity are enhanced. The resulting output from the pickup is low and prone to interferences. Therefore the first amplification stage is made with the tube inside the bass.

I had the chance to noodle a bit with the bass shown in the videos. The pickup is very responsive and rich in detail. Like EMG’s made in the fifties :)

Although the price is very high, they are bringing something new to the table. If I was looking for a new boutique instrument and had the money, I would consider a Ruokangas bass with a valvebucker.

All of the @Sushi Box FX preamps sound great on other instruments as well as with guitar amps, they all simply each have their own voice. I regularly use them with my guitars or piccolo bass, electric piano and synths to add tube warmth. I also prefer to use them when re-amping a guitar part instead of plug ins for the added juice that digital modelling so often misses.
 
Is there normally some high end loss with tubes? I have an Underground Accelerator & enjoy the tone I get from it but I notice that it does limit some of the higher frequencies from my instrument which in turn effects other pedals in my chain. Is this common?
