The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Sorry if this has been answered before but i am currently using my Space Heater on Max gain and the volume wayyy down like around 1ish.. The slightest turn on the volume makes the volume jump up or down a considerable amount. Is there anyway to give 'more play' with the volume control????

I am aware changing the tubes changes the gain but i really like kicking on the SH with full gain (cuts through like a samurai sword) So just wondering if there was a way to make it easier to dial in the right level quickly if ya get me? Cheers

I was using my SH last night and was sort of doing the same thing. The way I mitigated it was by using the volume knob on the bass. That allowed me to turn the volume up a little higher and fine tune it on the bass. Sounded great, however I was also using a 12AU7 so I might have a little more wiggle room than something like a 12AX7 maybe.

Did Space Heater ever have the attenuation trimmer? or was that a thing after SH was already discontinued? If your pedal has the attenuator, you could try turning that down to get more range out of the volume pot.

That's cool. I'm one of them players who just sets and forgets the volume on my bass pickups as i got 2 thunderbird pickups and sway a lot more to the bridge PU, so i'd have 2 volumes to change. What do you think of the Space Heater?? I think it really adds this great treble bite maxed out. I'm currently using it in a loop blender to drive into a slightly overdriven MBD-2 and it sounds badass when kicked in. Real nasty sound :D

I really like the Space Heater. I initially bought an Underground Accelerator and really liked it, so I then took the DIY Space Heater route and built up a few of them for different projects. The Space Heater is a really great circuit and lends itself to lots of great things. In my mind it's sort of a Keystone circuit that can be the building block for so many different uses. So far I've made a DI box with a built in HPF, a vanilla Space Heater in one of the Sushi 125B enclosures, and I've made a two channel preamp with a phase inverter and a James tone stack for my double bass.

I like just a little bit of growl on my electric bass tone, and the SH is perfect for that. However it's also refined enough that it sounds amazing with the Double Bass. I've also got a DIY Particle Accelerator that primarily acts as a preamp for my ribbon mic. Currently that's my favorite one to use with the DB. Nathan is the best sort of enabler there is. Providing and encouraging great products that can be used in a myriad of ways.

I dig the space heater as well: It gives me the ability to efficiently tube-enhance any device I pair with it.

Question for folks who own both an Elementary and a UA; do you find there is much/any tonal overlap between the two?

I would definitely like to pitch in and help out the Sushi Chef in this little crunch period. Will eventually put together a wee, li'l fly board, and wondering if I'd like the Elementary on there, instead of a second UA. Absolutely nothing wrong with just grabbing another one, since I know I love the UA, but I've also always loved some of those "classic" Hiwatt bass sounds (looking at you, early 70s John Wetton!!!). Typically my UA is set *just* on the threshold of breakup, so if I play like Geddy Lee (ie: Hulk Smash), it gets a bit hairy, but is otherwise a nice, thick, clean sound.

The literature suggests the Elementary would do this well, but just hoping for some confirmation opinions before I go in and pull the trigger.

I have (and love) an Elementary and had a Broughton Silver Deluxe, so my comparison isn't exactly what you were looking for.

I found that I could dial in a tone on my Elementary that was pretty close to the SD (when set at 5-10-5). The SD had a little more low mids, but it was really close. I could not get the SD to sound close to the Elementary with my typical settings.

I found the Elementary mid-scoop is a little lower in the frequency range than the SD. It makes the Elementary bottom end sound very big and full without being muddy (noticeably bigger than the SD). The mid control on the Elementary really controls the high mids, so any setting with the mids dialed above 3 resulted in tones that the SD just couldn't copy. There is a lot of high end in the Elementary, but it's easy enough to dial back (I rarely have the treble control above 3).

I have ready a few comments on this thread about people not liking the breakup on the UA. My impression was that this was mainly at higher settings. Obviously I can't speak to that, but I really like the breakup on the Elementary. I've exchanged a few messages with Nathan asking some questions regarding the difference in the gain stages between the Elementary and the UA. If I have it right, there are differences that actually lower the overall amount of gain in the Elementary, but the amount of clean headroom is also lowered. If I have that right, it makes sense to me as it's a very smooth transition from clean to just a little grit. There really isn't a line between clean and not clean (if that makes sense).

I had been asking around about the same comparison a while ago (I was thinking about getting a UA). After my experience with the SD (and I know, I'm assuming it is similar to the UA), I'm sticking with the Elementary. I think it just suits me better.

My experience with the two. By themselves, especially just playing at home, and just prior to breakup, I like the Elementary a little more. When you get into breakup the UA sounds better to me. Live, it’s no contest, the UA is way better. They both lean towards scooped by their nature, but the Elementary just was not much once in the mix.
I’m eventually going to get another UA.
As always, YMMV.

I have my UA on my home/recording board and I use my DWHW as my preamp into a power amp for live shows. I do use a Broughton RFE live also to help compensate for the Hiwatt mid scoop but the gain is tastier then UA for me.
