Hey, I bet this has happened in this thread already, but has anyone done a side by side comparison of the Slampegg and Underground Accelerator?

I understand the difference in the tone stacks, mostly wondering how well they can do the “clean if you play normal drive if you dig in” thing like say the barbershop.

Also how wondering how gnarly that bright switch on the slampegg is, I play flats and always love that on svts.

Do any of y’all run the UA at 18v? I’ve got a 1spot CS6 powering my board. Getting a pulse and metronomic thump when I plug the UA into the 18v spot, but the problem resolves when I plug into the regular 9v spot.

I’m guessing it’s the power source that’s the issue. I plugged a wall wort into each pedal on my board and the problem
disappeared. I found several threads on various sites but none actually produced a resolution to the issue.
I’m guessing a new brick is in my future.

All SushiBox pedal run at 9 or 12v. 18 is not supported and could damage it.

9 and 12 sound the same, no difference at all.

Which Sushi Box could go toe to toe with an EBS ValveDrive sort of dark spongey overdrive? Seems like a London Underground or UA might work from what I’m reading, but would love to hear first hand experience.

Note: while I believe most Sushi Boxes could kill as always on pedals (my Smoke Signal certainly does), I’m not really looking for a clean preamp so the ability to do clean is irrelevant for this search. Need a thick dark tubey drive to toggle on and off.

Without having tried an EBS Valvedrive I'm taking a shot in the dark, but for dark spongey overdrive I would lean towards JC Emerald (low to medium gain) or Black Eye II (medium to high gain) depending on taste.

Thanks for this! Have you played a Carl Martin Bassdrive by chance? I would consider that similar to ValveDrive although a little hairier.

Although maybe this would be a better comparison: how would you compare Black Eye II to a Smoke Signal on bass? I love my Smoke Signal clean channel as an always on, but the dirt channel is too aggressive and biting. I suspect that while different tubes would certainly change the gain, it’s the preamp/eq that make the difference between bright/clanky and dark/warm.

Black Eye has about as much gain as Smoke Signal's dirt channel, so that may be a bit too much for what you're looking for, but I do find that the tonestack makes it very useful and flexible.

I unfortunately haven't tried the Carl Martin Bassdrive either.

Only because the weather has let up a bit. We got stuck between $1500 to repair our 15 year-old unit or $4k to replace it, so we have a couple portable units that cycle through the different rooms of the house throughout the day. We're going to make a final decision tomorrow, which is currently leaning towards replacing the old unit.

So if anyone was on the fence about buying something, now would be a really good time. I have a couple things I'm planning to get listed tonight (Noble, REDDI, HW Finally in Dirty Magic) as well as the usual stuff.

Yup, we're in the process of getting quotes for replacement. Stuff is expensive.
