I was wondering if was that version, I have a couple of those of my own lying around somewhere. It's the same general concept as the current Lab Rat, but admittedly voiced better for guitar rather than bass. Stock Rat tone control instead of James treble/bass, and I used the second stage of the tube as a footswitchable clean boost instead of as an output buffer. I had forgotten about the 3 way clipping switch, but that one carried over into the current Lab Rat.

I have used an Alembic F2B in the past and loved it. I was using a @johnk_10 FET-F2B that is wonderful and clean for many years on my pedal board, it is on my second board now. My first SB was a mini tube Particle Accelerator that I use in my recording set up. Now I am using the Underground Accelerator because it is more versatile and has a nice depth and heft. The UA in low gain settings is just as clean but has a bit of depth over the PA to my ear that really works live plus the ability to push the gain for grit is a plus.

the performance at live band levels is huge! I’m torn on one of these or like a backup di/preamp pedal. Or doing both. Just incase something were messing up with my heads DI an then I could use it as a tone pedal when using my genzler magellan head. The last show I had uuuggghh sound guy had me thinking rig an DI wss alreayd to hot let’s just say it was on him but still I wonder how quite these pedals are. They seem amazing on all fronts tho

Ooohh the UA can be its own DI as well? Idk I didn’t see that! The PA do that? If it’s got the DI I bet I will be happy with this pedal. An I have no other dirt or pedals I have other than envelope filter. The genzler magellan 800 is really clean platform im thinking I would love one of these!!

Finally and Venus X are the only pedals I make (so far) with a D.I. output, none of the others have D.I.

I use @Sushi Box FX pedals and DI for recording and there are no issues with noise. Amp DI outs are quite often at line level that most consumer mixers can't handle, so I side with the sound person. For that reason I always carry a quality passive DI in my kit, Radial JDI.

Make sure you have it on the 800ma output on your IsoBrick.

The X variant comes from back when there was a 12ax7 version and a mini-tube version. Now there is just the 12ax7 version so no X is needed.

Amazing man! Killing it well I have to go with the UA id say. I mean the genzler magellan DI from my head is great so this will be more of in tone enhancer but it will be great to have the option if needed to run it DI! Well it sounds like the exact pedal I’m lookin for especially at the price point. Clean break up. But retains bass. I have a feeling looking at the build these pedals are not to noisy either! To many people telling me this is the sound I’m after an I think it is for that clean break up tube tone. I was looking at getting a PA maybe cheaper but I think the UA with DI out “can’t wait to just record with it” an then it seems like it maybe keeps the bass a little bit better then the PA is worth it for what I’m looking for

dude I just ran into a sound man literally that about ruined a whole big show for us cause he couldn’t handle this exact issue I think. I’m learning myself but he didn’t know diff between mic/ line an he didn’t get he needs to back way off! I’ve played this house many times ab never ever had this issue with the buzzn “only through” monitors he was getting. while my cabs are dead silent an sound perfect. It was bad during show it was great but we legit took my board out an t blah blah an he woudnt believe it was on him I have a genzler magellan 800’head an I took it to local store he has a high end pa set up for display ran only my di an bass an it was dead silent but he did say as you said line level was workable but much much hotter signal. I get it could’ve been my DI being feedback ish from head but it was so obvi thr sound gy it was worst experience. But it made me realize I do need to bring a spare DI just incase it is on my end sometime.


How’s the sushi sound through a PA or the di itself?

Thank you, I love the Becos. One of my favorite things about it is the saturation circuit. It brings out the upper harmonics to give a fatter more present tone. It pairs well with the UA.

Seriously, Line Level on the Magellan is hot enough and intended to be used to run a PA Power Amp. Switch your DI to Mic and never deal with sending too hot to anyone.
All DI Boxes run Mic Level, that is what the board is looking for.

Finally is brilliant in the studio, I have not used it live but many here do and have had great results. The xlr output is from a transformer therefore at a mic level, @Sushi Box FX uses the excellent @lightningboy audio transformer and some early models might have the Jensen transformer.
There are several types if DI outs, too many assume that if it is an xlr that is will be mic level, many amps and effects are much higher at line level. This is what leads to issues with clipping and unwanted noise. This is not an error as those devices have a line level output for interfacing with professional level live or studio mixers, for driving powered speakers or other devices.

Currently, I'm using my finally, on bass with along my UA, in the pit for "Sister Act".
We soloed the finally alone, during initial sound check, to set gain and level; the sound designer and house engineer both flipped over the sound. According to their ears it has a warm and resilient sound with zero noise and hum. I installed a 12AU7 in mine to cool it down and allow more tube gain before saturation/distortion, which did the trick. This show is heavy on the bass and being "out front" in the mix with a lot of slap and pop style. I'm routing the finally's 1/4" preamp out to my bass amp monitor and it sounds absolutely fantastic in the pit and in the house too. I've literally used 100's of DI's over the years (all the way from a cheap $30.00 Rapco up to Countryman, Radial, and Neve) and the finally beats all of them. Sonically it is on par with my old, non pedal, non adjustable Demeter studio DI with the Jensen transformer. The finally is a great long term investment and you can use it as a pure tube preamp without EQ, even if you don't need the DI out functionality. It will easily find a home in your signal chain and it offers more performance and value than DI's costing 3X's as much. The finally is audiophile quality, hands down.
