The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

So, the only difference is the DI out on the Finally? Someone who has an amp with DI out would have the same result with just the UA?
@Sushi Box FX is correct, but more tubes is always better, to a point.
FWIW a UA into even a passive DI sounds fabulous, I often pair my SBFX preamps with a JDI, Type 85 or RNDI simply because I have them.

Another of my fetishes is for DI boxes, I have a dozen or so from 45+ years of needs and GAS, FWIW my current fave is the Finally V1.0 so the new 2.0 version is tempting for the added options and differences.

But a quick data point for reference, typical pedals and amps for electric bass have an input impedance of 1MΩ, whereas it's common for upright bass to see 5.6-10MΩ. Jensen's D.I. transformers have an input impedance of 140kΩ, whereas my new transformers have an input impedance of 2.2MΩ. I don't know what LBA's are, he hasn't published that data.

I never took the time to ask Mike about that either, but I will say the MC15 plays very nicely with double bass as both an input microphone transformer and an output transformer. Of course it's at the end of my preamp circuit and I've never tried it as just a stand-alone passive DI. I've got an old A-11J type transformer based on the Wolfbox that I use as a passive DI, never felt the need to build another after putting that thing together.

Excited to see how your update turns out. Always something cool and creative.

I have questions for those in the know...

The UA is highly rated but some are suggesting a Finally is also needed. Why?

If one is looking for a tube tone from a pedal and two are required, maybe you should be looking for a full tube amp. Cost wise you are half way there...?

For my current board, i do like to have the added benefit of EQ with my UA at the front of my chain, and the convenience of the Finally dual outputs at the end, along with the "tube sandwich". it's not needed, but is is ever-so enjoyed!

What's your main amp and have you ever considered a tube amp?

my main amp is a Quilter Bassblock 800 and i love it!
i have a Mesa DI as well, so between that DI and the Finally, i can get plenty of tubey sounds.
i have considered a tube amp, but have not gotten one yet.

actually, these days i'm mostly using the Finally as my DI for my acoustic guitar rig, and it is perfect!
The 1/4" can go to an amp if i need backline, and the DI goes to FOH.
i had a Space heater at the front and the Finally at the end, but traded the SH for a UA so i could have more EQ control at the front to help shape whatever instrument i'm feeding into the board.

Thanks for the info!

I kinda hate to admit it, since it served me so well for over a decade, but I've basically retired my Orange Terror head since I started using an Underground Accelerator (and now, even more so, a London Underground). I've been using a Mesa head for a while now; turn some Sushi on in front of that, and I don't actually miss the Orange very much at all.

Plus, it's a lot easier to bring a pedalboard in my carryon luggage than a tube head, so it gets extra points for convenience!

Last night I used the UA in the FX Loop of my Stomp as my "amp" and the Finally DI going to FOH as well as the thru to a QSC 12" speaker. Sound was phenomenal. First time using a PA speaker on stage, but I could see great use of it going forward instead of an amp.

And while I am intrigued by the concept of a V2 Finally.. if there wasn't such a thing I'd have no reason to feel like I needed to replace my V1, it sounds phenomenal as is. Whether or not the upgrade I suppose is worthwhile to you is the real question. You can never have enough great sounding DI's laying around so getting another wouldn't be the worst

@Sushi Box FX

just curious as to if the custom ordering will be available soon?
Also
As myself and I’m sure others are curious: any updates on Grandslampeg?
I got the parts in yesterday to repair the printer, I'll see if I can find time this weekend to get it back up and running.

Nothing on Grand Slampegg yet, I've been a bit preoccupied lately.

@bassbrad @Derek Williams
I was thinking a two channel Ampeg themed pedal would be great. One channel the grandslampeg the other SBVT

I'd imagine that would be a honking big and expensive pedal even from @Sushi Box FX.

Yeah, you're talking about 4 tubes and a D.I. output. You'd have to double-up outputs on a Cioks to power it, and it would be huge and expensive. Not likely to happen.

Grand Slampegg and SBVT need some of you love, hope things clear up for you soon and all is well.
I know they do, I'm trying to get Finally v2 taken care of. I keep forgetting to follow up with Ian for his feedback on Grand Slampegg. SBVT II is probably close, I just need to get it back in front of me and go through it.

Furthermore is stalled while I work out some procurement stuff to make it realistically manufacturable, once I get that sorted (probably next year after NAMM) Furthermore will go back to center stage on my R&D queue.

Question about the sushibox preamp delicacies, which ones provide for a more scooped tone and which provide more focus in the mids?

My experience, so far, is only with the Elementary, which, to my ear, tends to sound scooped. In other words, when using that pedal, I find it a little more difficult dialing in mids with a Jbass.

Thoughts, comments, and, opinions?

@Mr_McBride I think, if you are looking for something which can get you a mid-bump, the Slampegg may be a good shout; it doesn't have a mid control per se, but if you were to cut both the Hi's and Low's a little bit (and then boost gain/volume to compensate), you'd be in effect getting a mid-boost in your signal.

It'll just depend on whether or not you jive with the "Ampeg" sound!

Well, you just hit the nail on the head. I tried to avoid the ‘Ampeg’ influenced characteristic. I might get flogged for this, but I am not an Ampeg fan. I’m not saying Ampeg is bad, but my personal taste lies elsewhere.

I am currently playing (at home only) through an Aguilar. I also have an Eden head that I fond of. I’m here because I gig ampless these days.
