My chain for this recording was simply a 76 PBass with GZR pickup and flats > Sonic Research Turbo Tuner > Finally V1 > interface. No plugins and just a little low mid bump for EQing. Think I had both the gain and volume at about 11 o'clock.

I also had my Genzler Magellan and an AudioKinesis Hathor 1203 in the room, but it was extremely low and we didn't mic it.

Man, what a great band! I've always thought Jazz Musicians to be amongst the very best players. Makes me feel like a hack

Whelp, here we go down the rabbit hole again. . .just ordered a UA to complement my Slampegg, and to provide a different flavor to my board. I'm using an Edison into a More before the two preamps, and it sounds divine. By playing with the gains on the Edison and More, I can get their respective colorations to be more or less prominent. Super versatile setup, with lots of cool combinations to explore. Adding the UA will be another welcome option. Looking forward to it.

Thanks! I love Chris Wood's playing and especially on that album. Hadn't listened to that one in a while but I definitely hear it!

Ironically, my other band is a three piece Soul/Americana band with harmonies influenced by - you guessed it - The Wood Brothers!

Which version?
  • Original Lab Rat - miniature tube, four knobs, two footswitches
  • Lab Rat X - 12AX7 tube, four knobs, two footswitches
  • Newer Lab Rat (SMD/HW) - 12AX7 tube, four knobs, one toggle switch, one footswitch

It's possible, I think the Lab Rat X was all before "the fix" became standard, so when you get it you can shoot over a pic of the inside to verify if the fix has been done, it's going to depend on who owned it previously and if they did it/had it done.

The circuit itself is basically a standard Rat with a single tube gainstage replacing the transistor output buffer. The second stage of the tube is used as a clean boost, activated by the "Boost" footswitch. The boost is set up to be independent of the drive, so you can actually use the clean tube boost when the drive is bypassed, and the Boost knob becomes your volume control.

I'm pretty biased, but I think it's a neat pedal.

I was thinking about getting that one myself, to go along with my later-issue lab rat...

On that note with "fixes," should we DM you directly @Sushi Box FX if we have an issue with a pedal or just post in here? I have a Sashimi that seems very quiet until the Volume knob is at about 4 o'clock and then it skyrockets in output volume. Not sure if it's a dirty pot or what.

I've loved all of your other pedals so I figured the price was right, would be worth trying out. I'll be sure to take a pic of the inside when it comes in; this may go on a board with a different tube preamp so the fix might not be necessary. I like the idea of having a boost and distortion in one pedal and to be able to use them interchangeably!

I almost bought that same PCB last week because it looks super cool. I went with the Nobelium instead because I have too many bassman style preamps in my life at the moment and needed to build something different. I'm super excited to get it.

Is that top artwork a vinyl label? It looks so clean.
