The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

And now I wish I could say I'm going to bed early tonight so I can be well-rested for my last day of day-job-work before NAMM, but I have a pretty pressing reason to stay up a while longer.

If you have a Finally v2 backorder, expect a shipping notice soon.

Sorry to beat a bit of a dead horse here, but which SBox pedals have a relatively flat baseline EQ? I love the tube saturation from my MORE, but I do miss the thump of my upright through it from time to time. Would 2x UA or a UA -> Finally be relatively flat while maintaining that level of saturation? (This does make me wonder about the Nobelium and BassDude as well in comparison to the MORE, if anyone knows about their EQ profiles in comparison)

I haven’t played my double bass through the UA lately, but I do play it through my PA all the time and it sounds amazing. While I don’t have the Bassman yet, I have played through circuits that are pretty similar and it to sounds amazing. I’ve got a Nobelium PCB on my bench right now but haven’t finished assembly. I can’t imagine it not sounding great. So basically I’m saying you probably won’t go wrong with any of them.

In regards to the baseline EQ, I don’t need a flat EQ… I just need to know what those frequency point look like with everything at noon. Then it gives me an idea of what I’m tweaking. For my brain that system works well.

Slampegg Baxandall tone stack is "flat" with knobs at noon. TSC in the web

I use one on both my EB and DB pedal boards.

Also slowly building a Nobelium (all my parts are in, I'm the bottleneck). Certain it will be sweet.

EDIT: First sentence was "can be made flat".

Pedals with an EQ that can be made "flat":
  • Slampegg Bee Pre - Bass at 12:00, treble at 12:00
  • Underground Accelerator - Treble full CCW, Mids full CW, Bass full CCW or EQ switch off
  • Black Eye II - Bass at 12:00, treble at 12:00
  • JC Emerald - Treble full CCW, Mids full CW, Bass full CCW
  • Dreamcatcher - Treble full CCW, Mids full CW, Bass full CCW
  • Venus X - All controls at 12:00
Keep in mind this does not account for the inherent tonal characteristics of the circuits themselves. Black Eye II and JC Emerald will both cut a fair amount of bass unless the Deep switch is turned on, for instance.

Nobelium uses a Fender-style tonestack with a fixed mids setting instead of a knob. I'll run it through the tonestack calculator and see what the sweep looks like, but with Treble and Bass full CCW I expect it should still give a little bit of a mids scoop. I'm at work where I'm not in a position to pull up the Bassdude schematic and I don't remember exactly what it looks like. I haven't spent as much time staring at that one as I have Nobelium.

Oh and before I forget, I built up more Finally v2 than I needed for backorders so there are a handful in stock right now. Anything that gets ordered today before about 10PM will get shipped out before I leave for NAMM, anything after that will have to wait until I get back.

I fly out first thing Tuesday morning, but my wife (Sushi Box employee of the month) will drop off any orders that come in today.

You're the man!

I know I said the cutoff was 10PM last night, but an order went in around midnight and I shipped it while eating breakfast this morning :P

It's seriously too late to ship anything now though, I'm at the airport watching them de-ice the planes.

Hey for those that have tried both the elementary and the ua (or equivalents) which would you say has higher headroom / which are you less likely to overdrive the input?

Looking to run this as an always on a preamp downstream of fuzz, octave, and meatbox. Looking to try something in place of my origin bassrig sv, trying to go for a cleaner sound but one that still has that amp-like bouncy-ness or squishy-ness thing that the origin does so well.

I think the Elementary would have less on tap naturally. But, you can always put a lower gain tube into any Sushi pedal in order to increase clean headroom. I put 5751's in my UA and LU, and they've worked a treat! But 12AU7 is also a popular shout around here.

I don't think this is an easy question to answer. From my understanding in bugging Nathan about the differences in the gain stages between both pedals, the Elementary has less overall gain, but also has lower headroom compared to a UA. While I don't have a stock UA to compare, my take is that it's makes the grey area between clean and dirty a little wider if that makes any sense.

Hey y’all.
Rainy day and I have been messing with a bunch of pedals and thinking about a redo on my bass board.
When I run a PAX, UAX or Slampegg in front of Octabvre I get some desperate Morse code or some thunder without playing. Active or passive bass.
Gimme some bad advice, the best kind.

yes. Isolated power supplies and have mixed circuits as well. Is it a gain thing? Or some hoodoo interference? Or should I accept octave pedals are passé?

What happens when you put the Octabvre in front of the Sushi?

First off, I have no need for distortion in my regular work and if I ever need it I have it on my amp.

So, I'm all about clean and I have both the UA and Elementary with 12AU7's. The Elementary is much cleaner without distortion at nearly maximum gain than the UA. When my UA had the 12AX7 in it, it was atomic and too easy to distort, the 12AU7 cooled it down tremendously.

I'm actually liking the Elementary tone stack better than the UA, it's seems more responsive and effective.
But keep in mind, there is a trim pot in the UA that you can use to adjust the gain if you are having issues.

I also own a Slampegg with a 12AU7 and its a different animal due to the tone stack, it's an inherently lower gain and I get a great clean sound out of it.

I use all of mu SB pedals and get plenty of volume out of them with no noise, hiss or hum.

Since I have to use multiple basses on my gigs, I preset each pedal to use with a particular instrument.
As much as the SB pedals are alike, they are vastly different too.
They take time to learn the best setting and their nuances.

My bad/good advice is to just keep playing. Never stop. Constantly. Then you won't hear the interference.

Yeah. It sounds great. No Morse code or random thunder claps.

But I am curious why that’s happening. It doesn’t happen with my other preamps. In my experience the 3Leaf is really touchy with power supply and pedal order.

I’m not afraid to change orders. But more interested in the root.

Hey, Box, curious about the PAX. Is the EQ the same as UAX? Isn’t the main difference to the UAX the gain?
