I'm not a homeowner, but I've found my pocket knife/multitool to be pretty handy, it's got a can opener, bottle opener, and a toothpick along with two rather nice blades. I know plenty of people with spyderco's and the like, but my victorinox is bite-sized in comparison and has never let me down. That being said, I also like duct-tape a lot, haven't used WD-40 for anything but I guess I'll eventually bump into a situation where it'll prove handy. One of those multi-bit screwdriver and plier sets will always see good use, we've got like eight of them in the house, a hammer will never fail. I personally don't think that you can be prepared for EVERYTHING, but that stuff alone will get you through most tasks.

It can be used to set doors, hang sheetrock, tighten fan belts, shim ladders, B&E, light digging, split wood (with a hammer), pry and/hold stuff in position, pull nails, to name a few. It's use is only limited by one's imagination.

I tinker with guitars and basses a lot, and use the hell out of blue painter's tape for all kinds of things. Very handy stuff.

Some may know it as poly line. We use it as electricians to pull wire. I have even collected scrap from job sites and reeled it up on something later. It is strong as CRAP and you can waste it all you want. It's so cheap that you can tie something down, and when you get where you're going, just cut it and throw it away. Tie it down with some more later. I keep half a dozen of these around. Couple in my Tahoe. One in the junk drawer. Couple in the garage. And on out in the tool shed. It is rated at 210 lbs but I have literally been in situations where several grown men were yanking on it to pull wire through conduit. So it is stronger than its rating. I use it almost every day for something.

Portable charger for your cell phone. I work in the field and don't have access to an outlet or cigarette lighter, but I still have an additional 5200mA that fits in my pocket and allows me to stay charged all day no matter how much I try and drain my smartphone. Also helpful if you go overseas and the voltages don't play nicely with the stock charger adapter.

I know they have been said but a sharpie and a pocket knife are great to carry with you. I personally think if you like having a multitool with you to carry a separate knife. I never like using the knifes in them as they take too long to get too and are kinda clunky compared to just a standard knife.

Also, go Gerber knifes. Not the bear grill ones just their normal line.

I have, with a few exceptions, just about everything people have listed so far, but there is one thing I don't think anyone has mentioned yet.

Forgive me if someone has, and I missed it.

There are some places or circumstances where it is of no use whatsoever, but for the most part it is:

Cash money! Hundreds fifties, twenties, ones, and a little change.

Some of the most handiest stuff I have ever owned, and the one thing I seem to be quite short of at the moment.
