Some may know it as poly line. We use it as electricians to pull wire. I have even collected scrap from job sites and reeled it up on something later. It is strong as CRAP and you can waste it all you want. It's so cheap that you can tie something down, and when you get where you're going, just cut it and throw it away. Tie it down with some more later. I keep half a dozen of these around. Couple in my Tahoe. One in the junk drawer. Couple in the garage. And on out in the tool shed. It is rated at 210 lbs but I have literally been in situations where several grown men were yanking on it to pull wire through conduit. So it is stronger than its rating. I use it almost every day for something.

What about you guys? What do you find to be a must have around your house that many of us may not have thought about? I don't care if it is a tool, kitchen gadget, electronic gizmo, whatever. There are no rules. Tell us about something handy to have around that may have escaped us.

sharpies (think Floyd already covered that one) - actually needed one this evening and didn't have one...

pocket knives are great but i live in London and you just don't carry them here, even the legal carry ones.

3.5 to 6.3mm audio cable adaptors. and the other way around. and ones with phono ends.

a watch.

superglue.

drum felts.

a pocket corkscrew. you can open bottles on anything, but a corkscrew is the mark of a truly prepared gentleman.

spare headphones.

scrap paper and biros.

socks.

carabiners.

hip flask.

Carabiners have endless uses, for sure. And as for pocket knives, the thread really is more about what is handy at home, not necessarily for carrying. Although I always have a knife on me and I use it pretty near every day. For regular old knife reasons, not self defense.

I wish I could carry my mig welder with me though. A zillion and one uses for a mig welder.

The upside to carrying a pocket knife (Swiss Army knife in my case) is even at home, where ever you may need a knife, if you carry one, you'll have it when you need it.

Like you, I carry a knife for knife reasons. Can't imagine trying to defend myself with a Swiss Army knife. Though if it were all I had, I'd sure try.

Absolutely true. I have a Buck Oddesey in my pocket as I type this.

I think I covered my self defense tools in my first post.:)

Wow, the testosterone running through this thread is making me all tingly. :D

At the risk of proving a stereotype about women, I have:

The toolbox that came with the house
The touch-up kit of paint and caulk that came with the house
A cordless drill I have yet to master
A stud finder that I don't trust enough to use said cordless drill
A six foot ladder
A box full of various batteries (for hurricane season)
A cigarette lighter transformer in my glove box

Uh, that's it. :(

You know, my favorite thing about this thread is that I don't feel so crazy for keeping a BUNCH of "just in case" stuff around any more. I shall show this thread to the queen (maybe she won't roll her eyes quite so much when she realizes I'm not the only one).

Not a bad start actually.

A tip for the screw gun. Get yourself a screw boss. It is a bit that holds screw tips and has a little barrel that slides over the screw and helps you hold it steady while you get the screw started.
Stud finders work, generally speaking. All things considered though, I can find them easily enough by myself.
Paint and caulk always come in handy.

Lots of cool, handy gadgets in this here thread. You should maybe think about which stuff may come in handy for you and put it in your toolbox.

By the way, the bass in your avatar is awesome.
