the TRACE ELLIOT thread: Part II

Just rediscovered this one last week when wifey was visiting her parents. I fired up all my gear, but the Trace sounded much better than I remembered. It might just find its way to a gig.

A'ight, so I'm becoming very happy with my new, snootily-named and excellent British bass amp! Only thing I can't seem to find though is a manual for the 250SMX... The manual over at British Audio Service, which covers the SMX line, only goes "down" to the 300 model.

I'd be very interested to know if this manual is actually still available. Many thanks to any direction-pointing-in fingers to show the way!

Wow- last night it came into focus. I turned off the Pre-Shape, used the Graphic with Gain full-on, "Jonothan Livingston EQ Curve". Lo and Hi Comps at somewhere around 1/3 up, EQ Sweep about 'flat', Tube cranked all the way to the right. Input Gain cranked ("OK" light only on intermittently). Master Vol at 2 or so.

Beautiful sound- round but no mud, punchy but not annoying. A little 'crunch' on top. Not so much a dose of that classic "Trace-Elliot Sound" as just pleasant and where it belonged in the mix. Sounded like music!

It was jam night so I got to stand out in the middle of the room and listen, and was happy. I can do something else with my unused head-time now!!

...could somebody help me identifying the TE head I have bought in ebay?
The guy told me that "it should be 250W", that was all.

On the back there is just a handwriting saying "7210H"

So I guess it could be the head of a 2x10 combo.
But all the info and manuals regarding this 7210H combo show a completely different graphic on the front panel, sometimes with integrated compressor...

All my investigation brought me to have a doubt:
it could be the same head like the ah100 and 200

What the surest thing to check to identify it?

Thank you for your help!!!
Sergio

Do you have a pic of the back with some detail on the text written on the amp? A lot of TE heads had the same pre-amp as the one in your photo.

Tried to see if anyone has any ideas or opinions about the below without much response.
One MAIN question is, the trace at this point is running the 810 and the heat sink gets brutal hot. I have just had this head for about a month so I am not familiar if this is the norm for them or am I pushing it too hard. It generally runs at POST - 7 and PRE - 6.
I use the internal eq setting and it is set on active.

ANY thoughts on any of this would be great, THANKS much

Trace Elliott GP7SM130 Head (130W RMS - 250peak) with two 8 ohm outputs in back (which I assume means its min load is 4ohm)

Peavy Mark IV - 800w ( min 2ohm, 400W 2 Ohm or 250 at 4 Ohm)

Cabinets
15" Black widow 8 ohm speaker

810 cabinet (8 32 ohm wired to 4ohm)

THANKS for opinions.
Currently the Trace runs the 810 and the Peavey the 15, the signal is split from a Boss GT-6B Effects Processor (has stereo outputs so one sent to each head)

Ferret, I have the same head and I'm gigging with it this weekend. I'll check how hot it gets and let you know. I still find it amazing how much this 130 watt head can do decent sized gigs with no problem and compete with 100 watt stacks and a very loud drummer.

That would be GREAT. It just seems that it is a bit too hot. After a set I cannot keep my hand on the heat sink for longer than a few seconds. The amp does not cack out at all during the set. I know running an 810 might be a bit much but it is plenty loud, PLENTY, and is not clipping at all. I would rather keep using it to run the 810 at 4 ohms than make it run the 15 at *ohms.

Ferret, I run mine at 4 ohms too so this should be a good test for you. From what I recall of other things I've had with big heat sinks they do get rather hot. You could always put a small fan behind there to help keep it a bit cooler too. I also have an Ashdown head and it is fan cooled from the factory and its only 180 watts. It gets good tone but the Trace gets great tone and is my favorite head.

I love the sound through the 810. My Mark VI xp runs the 15". Obviously the Mark has a heck of a lot more power but I do love the Tone of the Elliot or I would just switch back and let the Mark run the 810 and the Elliot the Black Widow. I played an outdoor show where it was cooler out and it did not get as hot. I am trying to find a small fan to put behind it but I was interested to see if this was normal. If it is running hotter than it should then there is a problem I should be looking into and don't want to wait until its too late.
Letting me know how hot yours gets over the weekend certainly will help.

THANKS again
Don

I believe that Quatra started at $1699 on e-bay almost a year ago. He lists it on & off from time to time, hoping (I guess) that someone is willing to pay a premium for a rare amp. I doubt it will sell until he finally lists it below $900.
