The Trace Elliot V-type Club!!


I'm sure you did something to secure it, but from the pics it looks like the trace 410t castors could just move freely. Aren't you scared of it falling? What I'd there's an earthquake or a nearby sinkhole opens up and assists the cab. I don't know if I'd ever recover if my V8(I don't own one, I'm just playing make believe here.) Took am right foot tumble. Scary.

But awesome rig none the less.
 
I just picked up a 1048 cab today. I'm loving my new setup. I got the 300H a couple weeks ago. I switched out the EHX preamp tubes for some 12ax7wa sovtek ones and I feel like it's a big improvement. I also added a booster pedal that gives me tube overdrive. The EHX tubes didn't do it. Ima happy camper today

What preamp tubes does everyone have in their head? I started out with electro harmonix 12AX7EH but have since changed to Sovtek 12AX7WA and I'm enjoying the tone of those more. Next I'm going to try out some Tung Sol ones. I want to hear a variety to find which ones sound best. I am also curious about the shuguang 12AX7B Silver Dragon. Who knows.
 
Aside from being WAY to heavy to consistently gig in NYC, the 4 ohm load minimum is often a dicey chance when using club backlined cabs, which are very commonly 8 ohms. I know 8 ohms is safe to use, but I feel like it can't be good for the trannies.

8 ohms is NOT safe to use with the V-Type. Whomever told you that extremely misinformed. Be glad you went on the side of caution.
 
Am I overlooking something? The V8 (with 2ohm / 4ohm switch) manual says clearly that 'slightly higher impedance, such as 8ohm, can be safely used with the switch in 4ohm position'.

The people who wrote that manual worked for Gibson's guitar support and they were not the same people who made or provided service for the amp. The manual is dangerously wrong, but Gibson decided it was easier to roll the dice on potential repairs than shut out a large part of the bass playing market that used a single 8 ohm cabinet. Since so few V8's and V-Type 220's were ever made and most of them went to folks who knew better, it was mostly a non-issue.
 
From the Amps FAQ about tube amp output impedance-

To understand WHY tube amps don't like higher impedances and why they are MUCH more dangerous to tube amps than lower ones, you have to understand what it is in both types of amps that actually does damage.

In solid state amps, the output transistors are connected directly to the speaker load. Since solid state amps put out a constant voltage, the varible that determines power/current is the impedance of the load. Ohms law: P (power)= i (current)/r (resistance). The lower the load (resistance), the greater the amount of current is passed by the output transistors. Current also generates tremendous amounts of heat, which is why if the load is too low, the heat stress on a solid state's output transistors can damage them.

The same rules apply to tube amps, but there is a deciding factor that makes a huge difference. Tubes are extremely high impedance devices, and in order to be connected to a speaker, must be coupled through an output transformer which takes the high voltage/low current output of the tubes and makes a high current/ low voltage output that can drive a speaker. Instead of being constant voltage amplifiers, they are constant current amplifiers.

A transformer is an inductive coil that works by amplifying current and/or voltage. If the transfromer is not connected through a circuit on both its primary and secondary taps, it will feed back on itself and generate a large voltage spike at its connected end. What happens with too high a load connected to the transformer's secondary is that it acts like an open connection and causes feedback within the transformer. Since the primary of the transformer is connected to the plates of the output tubes, this voltage spike hits them first. As long as it doesn't exceed their limit, you're OK, but if it does, you can short them AND your output transformer.
 
Oh boy did I learn this the hard way long ago when I got my V6! Ran it into a single speaker without checking ohms at all. It was 32 ohms and the amp blew up some of the stock output tubes. 8 ohms does not have this catastrophic result, but I stick with 4 ohm or 2 ohm load now to get the most out of the tubes.
