The Trace Elliot V-type Club!!

Boss CE2? People are always asking about running amps at their rated ohms. I have been using an 8 ohm cab at home quietly with the V6. When I got the Stingray last week, I put the volume at 2/3 and was plucking fairly lightly until the power fuse blew. My SVT used to blow power fuses. It was an old SVT but it was the same 8 ohm cabinet. I will not be running any of my amps at to many ohms ever again. People say it usually doesn't matter, but I now think it does. I could have destroyed my V6.

It could be a wiring problem in the cab as well, but it is better to go lower than rated than high.

I've added a 410 for 4 ohms total and it sounds a lot better at the same volume level.
It's a small window, if you are running 2 ohm and lose a cab your almost in the "never turn your tube amp on without any speakers connected" area. Can you recommend a digital amp? I want to get a backup for this V6. My B15 has broken down and is long overdue for a rebuild. Something small around 500.

I use 2- 4 ohm cabs when I play with the V6, which isn't very often anymore. I've taken a liking to the Elf, as I've shared before. It doesn't push the air the V's do, but the DI is better, and it's a lot easier to pack in and out. I still need to try my V Preamp into the Elf..

Awesome! How would you compare the volume and tone of the V6 and V8? My V6 is a bit deeper sounding than my V8 and is very comparable volume wise.
I never tried out the max volume of both amps. So I think, the achievable volume is fairly the same. The sound of the V4 MKI or V6 compared to the V8 or V4 MKII is another one. I can't describe sounds with words. IMO the V6 has more "natural" deeps and lows and sounds more "relaxed". I like to say the V6 is a "Wolf in sheep's clothing". The V8 sounds more aggressive with more mids in EQ-flat.

The 6550's and KT88's are interchangeable. Some go for 6550's because they're a little less expensive. You can use either. The specs I have read say a good KT88 can put out up to 50 Watts. 6550's a few less. There's a little confusion because it doesn't add up to 400 watts for the V6. My V6 says 400W. KT88's are a little more physically robust and might last longer at max volumes. Tone wise, Kt88's have a clearer brighter top end and 6550's a little more mid. This makes sense because that's how the amps sound. I got a quote at L&M here and around $600 for 6 Gold Lion Kt's. I retubed my SVT in the 90's for half that. There's a pair of sweet looking heads. Not mine.

KT88s are capable of far more than 50 W per pair. The KT88 is a very robust tube capable of much higher plate voltages than are usually used in guitar amps. The Genelex datasheet gives 100 W per class AB1 push-pull tetrode pair, with fixed bias, and a plate voltage of 560 W, but a maximum design voltage of 800 V.

Traded for this Trace Elliot,recently. Should be here sometime this week. Don't know much about this type amp? I have had couple of AH500 12's before,but none like this one? Anyone know about this type amp?View attachment 3167689

A great starting ponit for the V-Type preamp is 2-10-2 on Bass-Mid-Treble. I love this preamp, and it's one of my favorite interations of the Fender tone stack.

Plate disspipation power has nothing to do with output power of the amplifer. And you may have to consider the application as well if you want to consider plate disspiation power. An electrical tool machine at full power may suck a way different (way bigger) average power then a bass guitar instrument at "full power".
Its just nothing but comparing apples to oranges!

If you try to address the worst case scenario like all the knobs all the way up, then that's probably true!
I don't think that tube life time makes a noticeable difference if the amplifier is used with common sense. I'd assume that mechanical strain of random real practice turing demands will reduce tube life time down to a very similar number of hours that equals lifetime expectations for KT88 vers 6550

That's why I do my choice tonewise rather then interested in any sales price

The amp sounds primaraly as is because of the amplifer design.

Fortunatelly my 70's SVT don't needs gold pins to sound good.

True but, we don't want to play any electrical 6-string.
