the Traynor YBA-200 thread

So, I was starting to think the YBA200 was a big mistake — it sounded bad at gigs, overloaded every cab I tried with it (including matching trayors), and generally made my old Yorkville 100w solid state combo look like a sweet and amazing little rig (which it is, but that's not the point).

Then the YBA200 failed onstage at a festival, crackling and hissing, and forcing me to shut down, @#$%. etc.
So, off to Long and McQuade — it was bought used two months back but has a year warranty.
Got it back last night. The difference is amazing — it's creamy, clean and thundering, without reducing the speaker into flatulating mush.

The tech sheet included fixing "open rectifier", replacing all four power tubes, testing the whole amp, and so on. $350 worth of work for free. Nice.

I'm blown away by how good this thing sounds when it works, and I'm back to being giddy about choosing the right cab. I play alt. country/50s rock, Fender P-bass.

I'm using the Traynor 115 right now. Nice weight, but does it let this amp shine?
My other choices are a used Aguilar GS212 or an Aguilar 410 - the latter is really heavy.

Or, Fender makes a 410 bassman, only 70 lbs. and cheap, new.

And thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

YBA200 guys....I'm considering going back to tubes by trading my GK1001RB-II for a YBA200. Will I be losing too much volume? (all gigs are PA supported). My cab is an SWR Goliath Sr. (6X10")

Thanks,
-Barry-

Tough call. I have a GK1001-RB right now (not the II) and the YBA-200 was the amp before it. They are very close in volume, the Gk is probably a hair louder. Close enough that I would feel fine using either one for a gig (the cab would be the limit, I have an Ampeg 6x10 as well)

Gotcha....I think I'll probably hang on to the 1001RB-II. I've got a BDI with tube emulation that gets me a pretty close tube tone and I've finally gotten my eq dialed in perfectly for my Gibson Thunderbird.

anderson, my rig was the yba200 with the goliath sr before all my gear got stolen three weeks ago. i would KILL to have this rig back. it sounds so effing good together. the natural transparency of the goliath cab (as compared to the ampeg cab i have now) really lets the tubeyness of the yba to shine. i've never really had much experience with gk stuff, but i can tell you that the yba/goliath sr combo is a VERY good sounding rig

I think i'm going to have to look into the goliath cabs...even the 410 would be fine for me right now. i was looking at, but don't want to really buy, an ampeg cab for that reason...they sound really dark.

I had the traynor head and liked it's sound quite a bit,i think it would work get in the studio but live i was alway's trying to dail in the perfect tone and could almost get it but never quite, i think it is a great amp but not for me i need more clean headroom so now i use a tech 21 compactor into a tech 21 bass driver directly into the power amp only of a peavey data bass power amp cabinet's are eden 8 ohm xlt with peavey kevlar eminence and somtime's a small fender combo cab.from the 70's with 8 ohm black widow.i will use one cabinet or the other depending on the gig.I AM a Happy man.

So I think Traynor would be perfect for me. It's pretty cheap, not too heavy and tubey. It's just that I have no idea what cab to pair it with. I live in Finland, and there's no way to get my hands to cabs like Sunn, MusicMan or stuff like that. I would get bergantino NV610, but I highly doubt I see those around here anytime soon. So I narrowed it down to few alternatives..

1) Ampeg HLF610 (I can't really carry 810 around)
2) Eden (some 4x10)
3) Something else? What?

All help is appreciated. :help:

my friend has an ampeg 610 hlf, and i brought my yba200 to his house so he could borrow it while he was transitioning to his new head. this amp sounds incredible through the 610. i was thinking of buying the cab off him!! (but, he sold it to someone else for more than i was offering.) lots of mid punch through the 610. plus, it fits perfectly on top, and looks damn good.

actually, i think you might be better off using the built in DI on the traynor head. the sound going to the PA will be closer to the sound coming from your amp. i'd go from the bass to the emulator, to the amp, rather than skipping the preamp. plus, it will just give you a little more control of the sound you want. that way, you'll get tube emulation, and REAL tube tone going to the PA!

Hi Mike.

Since you're now getting a decent sound from your revitalized YBA200 + a 15" Traynor cab (the TC115?), why not explore T's other bass boxes before straying from the brand?

Aside from Traynor's price & warranty being good, I'd imagine that the folks at Yorkville Sound made darn sure that their various Traynor bass heads & cabs work well together.

A definite must-try? Your YBA200 + a TC808. :bassist: :hyper:

Here's a TC808 wearing a YBA200-2.

Hmm....that's good to know! Don't get me wrong...I love my GK1001RB-II setup with my BDI but I do miss an all tube amp. Tube emulation circuitry can get close (close enough sometimes) but never totally nail it.

Man....sorry to hear about all your gear getting stolen. Totally sucks. I don't know what I'd do if it happened to me.

Okay YBA-ers, I need help.
I play in two bands - one, with more finesse, the traynor 115 cab does fine.
The other, loud and brash, the single 15 isn't quite cutting it - I'm about 12 on the gain and master, same on bass and mid - push it any more and I'm upsetting the speaker.

It's a stage sound issue - the house sound is fine, thanks to the DI.

There's obviously more room on the amp to get louder, but I'm not keen on carrying a monster rig to gigs. Am I missing something, or just asking too much from a 115?

Would a 410 offer more stage volume? A 212?

What do you play on stage with your yba?
