the Traynor YBA-200 thread

Piping in to say I bought the low gain kit from Eurotubes and it changed this amp into the perfect tone for me. If I turn the gain up to about 8 I get really stable and even distortion with out breaking up. I am playing it through a ampeg 4x10.
Any body try Schroeder 1212's or Aguilar DB112's or Bergantino Ht112/EX112? Which one do you like best and why. What would be the most efficient lightest option? Price doesn't matter. Just need a portable cab for coffee shops and practice.
I like a lot of low end some low mids and very little highs if that helps with your advice of comments.

VJ, I can't notice hardly any, if any difference at all when I come out of standby. But I don't run at gig volumes either. Maybe I could crank it tomorrow:hyper: and see if that affects it any.

Thanks very much - it would be comforting to know that what I'm hearing is fairly normal. I do think I'm going to look for a tube tech to perhaps set the bias (regardless of the self-biasing feature) more correctly for the tubes.

Thanks,
Jay

VJ, the YBA schematic doesn't show any bias adjustment pots. The way I understand it, if you have a tech set the bias in your amp he would have to replace some components with either fixed or variable resistors. That could be a concern if you are still under warranty.

I once had noticable hiss, tracked it to the preamp tubes. More with some & less with others, one even hissed a lot when cold but cleared up once it got good and hot.

You might try running the preamp out to another power amp, to see which section the hiss is coming from, i.e. preamp or power section.

If it is originating in the pre, adjusting the output bias won't help (and I'm not sure it would help in any case -IIRC the bias is set so that the output tubes run optimally i.e. max gain w/o distortion, while consistent with the design & safety parameters of the tube). Your tech can tell you.

Hope you get it resolved, I can tell it bothers you a lot.

I'll work with it. The preamp tubes are the result of a lot of rolling, and the hiss is not as present with the stock 6550s in the amp...so I'm thinking it's the way in which these particular power tubes interact with the amp.

And you're 100% correct - there are no bias pots in this amp. I think my best bet would be to look for someone who'd like some new EH KT-88s and then try some different 6550 power tubes...might react better with this amp.

I finally got to play one of these bad boys, and I loved it. Went to Corner Music in Nashville and played an assortment of P's and J's through it, and they all sounded great. I went in expecting to run everything flat (i.e. full on) except of resonance, scoop, and range. Turns out the rumors of this heads brightness are true, its VERY bright. Using a P bass with no Tone rolloff, I had to cut the highs back to about 2 o'clock, and I like a really bright sound.

After a lot of fiddling, I got a bunch of very usable sounds out of the head, from a deep bassy tone, to a VERY bright rock tone, even a pretty good slap sound. There was also a Moog lowpass filter plugged into the amp when I got there, so I got to play around with that too, which sounded pretty cool. It took forever for me to get my head around that pedal, but once I did, it sounded great through the amp.

My only complaints:

-Yes, it's midshy. Its just the tone of the amp, but using a bass with a three band EQ on board, its easy to dial in all the mids you want (and once you get to boosting other frequencies, it sounds OK to bring the treble back up on the amp).
-It did break up a little sooner than I'd like. The overdrive sounds great, but I only had to take the gain to 5 (12 o'clock) before it started to kick in, where as on say the SVTs, its a little bit more managable. When I get this amp, I'll have to look into preamp tubes that will cut back the gain a bit.

Now I'm off to review numbers and find a way to get this thing...

what cab/s did you get to play out of? curious as to if the cabs had anything to do with shy mid section.

Hey

Just one thing i just found out..
I have both the YBA200 US 120v transformer, and the YBA200 EU 240v transformere here.. and if you look at this picture, the EU 240v one is much larger... but the specifications (amperes out) seems the same according to the sticker. So to the people with more electrical knowledge, is the transformer bigger due to 240v input, or could it be a more powerful transformer?

If you look at the picture the left one (US version) is called "H-300" and the right one (EU version) is called "H-400" could that be that it have more power capabilities?

what do you people think, or know ? :)

I played it through the Yorkville 8x8 that it was sitting on top of and the Genz Benz 2x12 that was just to its left. I wanted to move it over to the Ampeg area and get my mind around the Traynor through some 10's and 15's, but it was in a corner of Corner Music (haha) completley packed down with gear, and I just didn't feel comforable trying to move it, and didn't have time to ask for assistance and end up having to get through the sales speach.

But FWIW:

The 8x8 holds up the low end surprisingly well. The 2x12 did a better job of getting that low end thump, but those 8's did well enough, and were really fast and punchy.

The 2x12 really emphasized the mid shy character of the amp. It got a really good modern scooped/slap tone, but that's all I really got out of the combination.

It's an old thread now, but I would like to bring it back. everybody show how your rig has evolved with your YBA 200!

Finally purchased one at the tail end of summer, and I still have it, and still love it. It's still stock, but I imagine that will change fairly soon. Sounds amazing when paired with a Sansamp...

Yeah, I've had the urge to retube it but I've left it how it is for 3 years and am just as happy as the first day I turned it on.

I sometimes run a russian big muff with a very slight distortion and it sounds really full with this amp. It really improves the big muff's sound.

Through my solid state SWR combo it sounds like a super cheap effect.

This thread is making me want my YBA200 back. It's the shop, being haggled over for $200 worth of tubes Yorkville wants to ding me for :hmm:

But assuming I get it back, I wonder if they'll have put KT88's in it. If so, I';; post my 6550 vs KT88 impressions.
I'll also A/B it with my V-4B through my 610HLF. I only got to hear the Traynor once or twice with the 610.
