the Traynor YBA-200 thread

Did you hit the one from Beaverton on CL ? I almost did but I was in process on SevenOrchids head up in the GFS.

We need to come up with matching cabinets so you can go scare someone with your DB and 400 watts of tube behind you ...

It was actually on Pill Hill but yeah, it was the one in CL. I dunno about that much power into a DB. You'd have a howl monkey and would be spending all your time chasing feedback.

You don't actually need to flip the stand by on the second one ... they'll still sweat:D Mine is coming with a set of Ruby 6550's and swapped pre tubes. I have a nmber if 12 AX, and AT equivalents lying around. I'll probably shell out for a quad of KT88's as well so maybe a mini GTG, tube swap, cabinet matching day is in order ?

Mine came with stock tubes but I got a set of 12AY7 (the number on the chart in the back so I assume these are direct replacements- but not Sovtek- dunno if that would make a difference) and a set of no brand 12AT7 thrown in with the deal. You, Charlie, and my buddy Robert (he came to the GTG) can get together and talk tube swapping.:ninja:

You could be right, my friend. If the amp hadn't farted out on the lowest notes at the volume I needed to be at, I would have gone the tube-rolling route. As it was, it seemed moot at that point. It's a great amp for the money. Many folks love it, so I'm sure my experience is the exception. Rather than deter players from buying one, maybe my post will encourage those who run into that problem to be more patient than I was. There are moments when I wish I'd kept it. Hindsight...gotta love it!

Well said. Easy for me to lecture about my YBA200 because it's used only at home and on lower volume jazz quintet gigs. I plonked in a couple of ARS 12AT7's I had lying around from my VTL audio preamp last night and I'm going to take it to church this weekend because we're doing a gospel / blues line-up and I might as well sound "vintage".

Boy, did that head all of a sudden get seriously clean when I swapped the 12AT7's for the AX's. It was a bit dark sounding before with the original Sovtek 12AX7's in it. Highs and mids galore now (too much actually, I had to back off the mid control) and lots of clean volume.

I can live with the volume limitations of the YBA because when I want serious decibels I can bring my Genz Benz GBE600 so I'm not in need of a "one size fits all" head. I enjoy the YBA200 for what it does.

I played my first gig last night with my Traynor and it was very nice. Great tone througout. :bassist: I tried an interesting experiement: as the volume went up throughtout the night (as it is want to do :rollno:), instead of cranking the volume I kept tweeking up the treble and mids and was making good use of the "range" control. It apparently worked as my wife said I continued to sound good in the mix throughout the night. Also was able to dial out some over "boominess" with the resonance control. I'm usually not one for a lot of knobs but I'm finding these actually useful.:smug:

So I'm filing this one under "keeper." :hyper:

Were you playing your upright or electric ? Good to hear to worked for you.

Mine's due in Wednesday and I'm really interested in getting it fired up.

Electric. This was my "classic rock" band. Although, we did some instrumental jazz kind of stuff in the breaks and the tone was very tasty for that.:D

I'm very interested in what you and Charlie come up with in evaluating the tube sitch in yours. I curious to try Hawkeye's AT7 swap for a little more clean volume.

Well - best way is for the three of us to get together so we can compare. The incoming one has upgraded 6550's. I'm really interested in hearing what the originals sound like and also a set of KT-88's. Seeing as I just bought a Hwy 1 P and 62 RI J last week - I'm probably going to hang a bit before buying that new quad of tubes though ...

Fish - you know of a swing / rock a billy / light country 6 string picker in Stumptown looking for a band ? I've got a new quartet in the works and we need that elusive 4th ... girl up front, the drummer is solid which makes me the weak link ;~) . We're rehersing in Camas, got two guys lined up for today but you now how the auditioning thing goes - I'm expecting 2 guys that think swinging is the guy at the end of the rope and look like ex-members of Spinal Tap ...

What cab were you using?

Kudos to Traynor as they got the amp back within 3.5 weeks (including the shipping time both ways).

The amp has lost the "crackle/pop" sound that was happening every 3-4 seconds. The repair tag said that they tightened connections and some solder joints as well as replaced two of the power tubes.

So far, so good...I'm taking it to play out this evening and this weekend, so I'll have 2 gig reports next Monday that I'll post up. I did retube the preamp with a JAN GE 12AX7 in V1 and a Chinese 12AX7WA in V2 (this particular chinese tube has been a standout in my rolling with other gear, so I'm happy to find it a home). I get plenty of clean headroom with these tubes even though they're both AX7's...that may be due to the modest gain of the JAN GE 7025s in general. Just a great sounding, musical tube with modest overall gain. I also use the same tube in V2 of my Demeter preamp and as V1 in another tube preamp/D.I.

Crossing my fingers for tonight.

Last night I used the Traynor for the show (didn't bring a backup other than a second D.I.).

This amp performed really, really well. The tone (EQ settings a couple of pages back) sat very nicely in the mix with plenty of full tone. After the show started, I actually did not hear the amp as I use in-ear monitors - but the preamp tone (which I do get direct with the in-ears) was nice and thick while remaining articulate. (I must say I simply adore what the JAN GE 7025 preamp tubes do to just about every tube preamp's sound in the V1 slot.) Digging in at time to time allowed for a nice creamy liquidity...and that's just from the preamp.

Bottom line is that it seems that with the right EQ, this amp really does very well. OBTW, 200 tube watts was PLENTY of power with a 4-piece classic rock band...Master Volume was set right at 4 all night.

Anyway, I'll play through the amp tonight and tomorrow as well, so I'll see how it holds up given that it's being driven quite a ways (90 miles one way last night).

So far, so good - I have EH KT-88's on order to be the main power tubes. The stock 6550's sound great, and they will make super backups for the EH tubes.

Good ol' YBA. I used it as a PA mains power amp tonight at a fund-raising event. It worked great on the receiving end of my Yammy MG12/4 mixer feeding a couple of 8ohm Yorkville monitors / wedges. Our vocalist and keys sounded very clear and the articulation of the speaker talking was immaculate. It had way more power than what I needed.

Interesting little idiosyncrasy of that amp is that the Master knob still works even though you use the AMP IN jack on the front. Other bass heads I've had with this feature completely bypassed all controls of the preamp, including the Master Volume and acted as a straight power amp.

Anyway What a great little amp. Oh yeah, I might just use it as a bass head soon.

The Dr. Bass 1260 NEO (4-ohm) sounds great with this head. Of note, however, the M-Line Wizzy sounds fantastic paired with this amp. It looks a bit strange given that the amp is twice as large as the cabinet, but for church this weekend I actually have the amp vertical alongside the Wizzy. The Wizzy is angled up, and I have great stage monitor volume as well.

I think Tombowlus mentioned that the M-Line cabinets sounded great with the Sadowsky Tube amp...I would second that with regards to the Traynor.

Yup, those M-lines seem to do great with tube power. :bassist:

Glad the YBA200 is working out so well for you! :)

For anyone running KT-88's in this amp...how's the master volume in comparison to the stock 6550's? I find that I need to dial a higher number to get the same volume with the KT-88 tubes. That may be normal with the self-biasing and running the KT-88's a little cold, but it would be nice to know. The tone with the EH KT-88s is noticeably tighter and a bit cleaner as well...pretty impressed with the tubes.

Also - how is everyone's "hiss" with this amp? I find that it's acceptable, but definitely there when I take the amp out of standby.

Looking forward to playing it out again this weekend with the KT-88s to see how everything works.

Jay

I don't own one (yet), but from posts on here I seem to recall that while the preamp tubes are self biasing, the power amp tubes are not.

Don't need to be biased....I appreciate the help, but the manual is quite clear in that the power tubes can be changed without the need to update the bias.

The hiss is not pronounced, yet it is there...just asking the question to see what others are getting.
