the Traynor YBA-200 thread

God I want one of these:D My Fender Rig is actually really awsome. Its louder than I need it to be, its pretty portable, and I really can't complain about the tone.

But I want some tubes so bad. On a SS Rig I can't crank the volume expecting to get a natural breakup of the amp. Its just loud:p

Plus I'd rather had a Head/Cab (or Head/Cab/Cab for that matter) setup than Combo/Cab. Its just more versitile.

Looks like I've got a minty YBA200 coming my way (for a fantastic price...patience definitely paid off!) in the next week or so. I've got plenty of very nice preamp tubes to work with, so I'll retube it as soon as it gets here.

Not to go over old ground, but I'd love to hear how people are running their EQ's again on this amp to keep the midrange present and the overall gain structure as pleasing as possible in a live, rock and roll venue.

I'm pretty stoked!

Jay

when you replace the preamp tubes, make sure you do it with low gain ones. you get more mids when you crank the gain so you want as much gain as possible. with the 12ax7's in it already, that's almost impossible without it disorting really early. i roll off the treble a lot, around 4.5-5 usually. this amp can sound very harsh to some people. the mids i have at 10. the range knob is a little interesting though. 0-5 and you get more low mid thump, 5-10 you get more high mid rock stuff. sounds great with a pick with the range around 7 or so. bass i keep around 7.5-8 cause my ported cab can sound a bit floppy with the bass any higher. scoop and resonance i turn off completely. but if you have the right cab, try experimenting with the resonance knob. it can do some cool stuff depending on what kind of room you're in. just what i've learned from my short (very happy) experience with this amp. good luck man

The YBA 200 got here....and....

Houston, we have a problem. I'm tube rolling as I type; however, I have a distinct snap/crackle sound every 3.5 seconds once I take the amp out of Standby (heard through the cab).:eyebrow:

This being my first bass all tube amp, I'm puzzled and annoyed. Even though I'm finding out how the EQ is working, there's no way I could play this out right now with an annoying "Snap!" every 3 seconds.

Any idea what this is? Would love to know fairly quickly as the amp just arrived.

I'm rolling tubes - other than the crackle, I'll figure this out. OBTW, the Dr. Bass cab (1260) sounds just fine with this head.

Well, I don't know what might be causing it, but dang, that ain't right! I would STOP tube rolling, and get that amp looked at, pronto. Tube amps can be harmful to your health if they are malfunctioning (or if you just happen to somehow discharge into your person  - so don't be grounded, if possible).

Normally, swapping tubes in a YBA200 should be safe and easy. However, since yours appears to be malfunctioning, I want you to be careful and stay safe!

Tom.

Is this brand new? I hope you can get it resolved quickly.

I’ve had mine for almost a year now, no trouble and I love it.

Got from Coop over on BABP....we're talking about it, but I'm pretty sure this unit is going to have to go back to Traynor for an overhaul. It was sold in "mint" condition, although it's really only in about 8.5 out of 10 condition. I've cleaned it up really nice, and prior to the advice to quit playing it, I decided on a JAN GE 7025 in V1 and a really nice Chinese 12AX7B (can you believe it? - just a super valve) tube in V2...they sound great together, and even with the gain on 6-7, I have plenty of cleanish headroom and great tone...

OBTW, once it does get fixed, I can't see how anyone doesn't think this is a LOUD amp....Oh my goodness...and I get plenty of mids out of this amp. My EQ settings so far are:

Gain - 5.5

Treble - 3.5

Mids - 8.5-9

Range - 2.2

Bass - 7.5-8

Scoop - off

Resonance - 1.5

Master - to taste - currently at 4 so I don't have the police called on me.

Talk about a cut-through sound! Oh well, I'll get to enjoy it in a month or so.

Your settings are close to what I run. I’ve only gigged with it a couple of times, but now the weather is getting nice I'll be using every Sunday.

these are my gig settings:

main- 5.5

Gain - 4.5

Treble - 3.5

Mids - 7.5-8

Range - 0-3.0

Bass - 8.0

Scoop - off

Resonance - 0-3.0

I'm just now starting to use the resonance and range with my 15" cab.

I would like to do a tube upgrade in the future.

like I said I hope it works out for you, I know with my previous head (gk700RBII) after 3 months I new it wasn't my thing, while this one is still fun to play with and I've had almost a year;)

OK, so...
I have a 1978 MusicMan HD150 that I like the sound of a lot.
SS Pre, tube power. It sounds, big, full, fast clear. Unitl you push the ss pre, then..ick;)
It gives you all you're gonna get out of it with input at 4 or 5, master on 10.
Mostly, it's enough with a big efficient cab.

I wonder if the Traynor would be "same but more?"
Able to get more big warm, clean, tube-ey power out of it?

Same complaint as others... got it in to hopefully compete with my old Ampeg V4b. Had stock tubes... Found the lows unfocussed, the highs brittle and very harsh, the mids non-existant.

Gave it to a friend who might be intersted. He put some vintage tubes in it... had the same review. He's giving it back and its goin up on ebay soon.

Granted... I have a rebuilt 70s V4b with JJs... he has a 70s SVT. So tone wise we've been to the mountain.

FWIW, I find the YBA200 to be on the lean/quick/clean side, as opposed to full/rich/warm/round. Yes, you can get some midrange fullness out of it (takes some work), but it is nowhere near as thick and warm as some other tube heads. The articulation is very good, though.

This is all IME/IMHO, and YMMV, of course.

Tom.

'm interested in getting a YBA200 with the matching cab. However, the fact that it may be underpowered is kind of pushing me towards another amp (Fender Bassman 300).

How do you think it would fair with a JCM900 (4x10 stack) and an AC30? My two guitarists play loud and we have Animal on the drums. I currently have an Eden Traveler (300w) with an Ampeg 4x10 classic. I usually have to play with the gain and master volume at 3 O'clock to fit in.

Not only does the sound of this amp interest me, but it's so reasonably priced. However, I don't want to have an amp I need to replace in a few months because it's not loud enough. I'll be on the road gigging a lot at the end of this year and then probably back in the studio.
