the Traynor YBA-200 thread

by the way, has anyone bought a road case for their YBA?? I'm seriously considering one since my rock band is about to start playing a lot more gigs.

anyone have any suggestions?

I had the folks at Anvil make a custom case for my Trace Elliot V8. It wasn't cheap (partly due to the mack daddy removable casters), but man, does it give me piece of mind (and the wheels make that beast easier to manage).

I think that this case cost me somewhere around $300. If you went with a smaller case, and no wheels or fixed wheels, it would be a good bit less.

Tom.

I have no idea how to get to what is in your sample, but what I get out of various TB postings is this (and fellow TBers, PLEASE correct this if it is wrong, because I am certainly an entry-level student here):

In your case, if you want less overdrive or more controlled overdrive, you need to reduce the gain in the pre stages, as per Brent Norton and others.

To do that, the 12axt's (mu~100) should be replaced with lower gain tubes such as the 12ay7 (mu~45) or 12at7 (mu~60). Possibly even the 12avt (mu~41-47) although I haven't seen that particular one mentioned, so I don't know if it works well in preamps, as the 12au7 (mu~20) doesn't. So specifically, putting in an EH 12ax7 will probably NOT do what you want to the overdrive.

Another benefit of replacing the existing tubes is a change in the sonic performance. Many tube vendors, like Eurotube and thetubestore.com, give reviews, opinions or descriptions like "super low noise", "rounded bottom with smooth mids", etc. so you can choose a brand & vintage that helps get the sound you want.

And for whatever it's worth, that is about the extent of my knowledge. I sense a frustration on your part, but I think you are getting close, so hang in there.

THanks tom! I don't need anything quite THAT nice, but I was looking to spend around $200 or so. Shelling out a little money is always worth a piece of mind, IMO.

I think that you could probably get a smaller, thinner case with no wheels or cheaper wheels from Anvil for around $200. To be honest, their prices were less than I had expected. I can get you the contact person's name and number, if you like.

Could some of you post your settings on your YBA-200? I'm still having the problem of the huge booming lows, I've taken some notes from this thread and am going to our band room tonight to experiment.

I also think I'm gonna order a 12ay7 and 12at7, like suggested in that other thread to see if that helps........if it does, I'll probably go ahead and get the KT88's.

just got back from tinkering with my amp and think I may have improved it a bit but it's hard to tell without the full band.

Also wondering what cabs everyone is using with their YBA-200's, since someone commented on how they sound better with sealed cabs?

What are your settings? And what cab are you using for it?

I use the matching traynor cab (ported) and I love the punch of the 10's combined with the warmth and body of the 15. I keep the tweeter off when playing live. I think it is a great cab, very versitile. Tubes and sealed cabs is a preference thing... so it is kinda misleading to say one is better. Keeping the resonance low should compensate for any loose sounding lows... the resonance knob is actually a very useful knob. Very underrated. I get super tight, but powerful lows with my setup. This cab can go really low without sweating (lower than a sealed cab)... same for the highs if you use the tweeter. The cab also strikes me as being quite efficient... though that is my gut feeling and not scientific. It is the "this rig gets really really loud" test.

I am using an Eden 410T (rear ported) cab with mine. I'm just trying to figure out if there is a more suitable cab other than the Yorkville matching cab.

thanks!

In reality I have only played the amp with the matching cab, a Yorkville 8x8 (very punchy but didn't have the fullness and warmth of the matching cab to my ears. Probably sweet in a band situation though), and a 4x10 (peavey or avatar I think... it was at a gig. I found the highs too shrill and the lows too weak, but I just plugged in in a hurry and my amp setup was for the matching cab so I was not really the cabs fault). Any other cab was not used long enough for me to give any real opininon. Maybe others will have a say.

I say just go to some stores with your amp and bass and plug in to lots of different things. That is what I did.

p.s. what are your amp settings with the eden?
