the Traynor YBA-200 thread

FWIW, cabs which I have found work great with the YBA-200 include the (sealed) Bergantino NV215 and NV610, the Sadowsky SA410 and SA210, and the Music Man HD-210. The Sadowsky cabs capture some of the vintage vibe of the NV610, but with the added high end potential from the tweeter (and with greater overall clarity). They are also very efficient, and make the most of the YBA200's output. The old HD-210 sounded great, and these go for cheap, if you can find them. The NV cabs just rule with tube, of course.

Does anyone gig with their YBA? What's your guitarist using and what cabs are you going through... thanks! :smug:

I gig with mine. you know what cab I use. The guitarists I play with use various small combos. No arena shows here, mostly clubs, bars, etc. I never have to push my amp hard live. Since I got the amp I have had to be mindful of not being too loud in the mix... and before I got a hang of the amo EQ my soundguy was always telling me to cut the bass freq.

p.s. I love this amp live. The tone is to die for at these volumes.

Yes! I gig with the YBA and an old 2x15" cabinet. I holds it's own against a vintage hiwatt 100W amplifier+cabinet, and an ampeg lee jackson 100W tube head w/4x12 marshall cab. MORE than enough for (non-PA'd) clubs and bars.

Just got back from band rehearsal and I will say cutting the Resonance and Range all the way down makes a world of difference. My tone from tonight compared to Sun. night is like night and day......it sounded GREAT tonight. I've kinda been stressing over this the past couple days since I've already ordered a almost $300 ATA case for this head but tonight really easy my mind a lot.

Glad to hear it! There are a lot of very usable tones lurking in this head. It just might take a bit more tweaking than some more straightforward tone stacks.

Someone said they called Traynor and the head person said it went down to 2 ohms, but it goes down to 150 watts.

160W... just keep it on the 4ohm setting on the back when you run it at 2 ohms (I think I said this earlier in the thread on page 1). The website has been updated to say it goes down to 2 ohms.

edit: nice case junior. I just got a padded slip-on for mine made with side holes for the handles. It should help protect other objects from my amp.;)

Thanks again Tom! I am very happy with the customer service I got with Ron! I'll feel so much better loading this head into the band trailer now.

Ron is good people. :)

The case for my V8 is just bulletproof, as I am sure that one is. If I find myself gigging with the Traynor much, I may get a case for it, too. Right now, I use either my SA200 for a clean tube tone, or a D-180 for a dirty tube tone (both in SUS-4 shockmount racks), but the Traynor can do a reasonable job of both, and is smaller (once it's out of the case, at least). Hmm....

i emailed the yorkville folk the other day about this very topic. they told me if i ran it at 2 ohms it wouldn't matter what position the switch was just whatever sounded better. and that if at 2 ohms i would still get the full 200 watts

I should dig up my old email because I was told the output would be roughly 160W at 2ohms... and to set it at 4ohms on the back when running 2 ohms. They did say however that I could run my 4ohm cab (the matching one) with the head set to either 4 or 8ohms depending on the tone I liked (I prefer it on 4).

Either Taynor has changed their specs, updated their employees on the specifics of this amp, or someone in customer service said something wrong. Not that it really bothers me, but I am curious to find the answer.

I think I will pop them another email... they have always got back to me the same day.

Thanks for the info.

I'll check tmo about the output at 2 ohms, but between 160w and 200w sounds about right...

I emailed Traynor Last night, and got this email this morning (how is that for customer service???)

"My info came from the design engineer so it's accurate and no design changes have been made. But even if it were 200 instead of 160W, you'd have trouble hearing the sound pressure difference. Remember, you have to increase applied power by 100% to get +3dB or roughly a 30-40% increase in average perceived loudness. It's only a 25% power increase from 160 to 200W. Do the math. In any case, it is 160W @ 2R with the output transformer on the 4R setting (it would be less w/the amp set @ 8R - no we don't have the rating, sorry).
Bye for now."

So looks like it is ~160W at 2 ohms (with the amp set at 4 ohms). With the amp set at 8ohms, but running a 2 ohm load you get a little less output than 160W.

you ever think about adding another matching cab? how do you think the head would sound with the 2-4 ohms cabs?
