the Traynor YBA-200 thread

I gigged with mine a couple of times now, and it's absolutely loud enough!! I use it with JJ 12ax7 and 12au7, my cab is a Peavey 410TVX (4ohm). I had trouble with the volume in the beginning, because I wanted to play it clean. I now use it with a load of overdrive and it gets very loud with a very nice warm tone...

Question: do you guys play it overdriven at gigging volume? Or is there a way to have a clean basssound that is also very loud? Would a 12ax7 to 12au7 swap make the difference?

Oh yeah, that's what I meant, swapping the x for y's or t's. But wouldn't that mean I just have to dial in more gain to get the same amount of volume? What I'm looking for is a way to achieve the same volume with less (or no) overdrive. I really like it when it's overdriven, it's a tube amp after all. I just wonder if it can be done. And I'm curious how others play it...

I'm taking it to the new and hopefully more qualified tech this evening.

Thanks man. Sorry about your troubles. I bought a new YBA recently, did the full 7 tube upgrade with Eurotubes. I've only played the head at low volumes in my apt.. Keep us posted (on the other thread). I won't post here anymore.

Boldey: the way I understand it (and I hope I'll get confirmation on this) is that you have to interpret "gain" in this context as "overdrive" and not as "volume", like the gain knobs on guitaramps.

So if you would swap a 12ax7 for a 12ay7, you would get the same volume at the same setting, but with less overdrive. For example instead of starting to overdrive with gain at 4 it will start to overdrive with gain at 8.

Somebody who owns the YBA and did the tubeswap please confirms this as I'm not talking out of my own experience and want this to be true.
Also can somebody give some accurate numbers about at which gain setting the amp starts to overdrive with the different preamp tubes. That would be great!

I did the tube swap and I did notice the pre amp did have more headroom with a slight drop in volume...but not siginificant enough in a band context.

What I do not understand is that some tubes eg, 5751, 12at7 are marketed as lower gain but are supposed to make a guitar amp distort sooner (I am assuming they are talking about the power section of the amp) and almost acts like an attenuator because it makes the power tubes work harder since less signal is getting to them. However this does not seem to be the case in the YBA200, can someo one explain this?

I'm just jumping in here with one of my first posts (I can tell threads move fast around here! :ninja: )... I just got a YBA 200 about a month ago. It works pretty well with the Sunn 215 Cab (replaced with Celestions) and gets a good old school vibe although I needed to pay more attention to the settings at the first gig - sounded like Bill Wyman on Friday, but pretty muddy/wimpy on Saturday.

Right now I'm trying to decide if it works better with the Avatar 212 Delta or the Sunn. Neither of them are getting the mids I like, but after reading this thread I need to tweak the settings some more....I'll probably replace the tubes pretty soon...

Aiiee - back to work!

Just a few pictures.

I also swapped all the tubes for JJ's (KT88's au7's and ax7's). It is a little hard to compare tone side by side as I had no recordings... but the JJ's seemed to tighten up the lows and fill out the mids. I am quite happy and will continue this setup into the future. Mind you, I had no issues with the stock tubes.

Also, the power section of this amp is self biasing. I didn't do any adjusting when I popped in the new KT88 tubes. I am told that they will run slightly cold... but I love the tone so I will take the extra tube life that this should give me. Most manufacturers run their tubes a little cold out of the box anyway to maxamize life.

Finally, and I talked to traynor about this, the amp can run at 2ohms. Just switch the amp to 4ohms on the back when you run 2ohms. HOWEVER... output is reduced to about 160W so it is kinda pointless as you will get more output at 4ohms.

On that note, you can run the amp on the 4 ohm setting (I am talking the matching speaker cab... I am not sure about others) OR on the 8 ohm setting and still get the same output. You can choose which ever setting you like the tone most with. I prefer the 4ohm settign as it sounds fuller.

Hey, that white piping around your head and cab looks awesome! How did you do that?

i just had to pass on one of these bad boys. with christmas right around the corner, it just wasn't in the cards for a new amp right now. it's a bummer, but it'll happen in due time. in the mean time, i can live vicariously through you guys and get some wisdom on the tube swapping/harsh highs/volume issue.
