Hello Valenti owners,

I've been looking at this thread for a while. I'm definitely looking for a 4 string p-bass. I've narrow my choices to Valenti, Lull and Nordstrand. Valenti being the cheapest (but with a solid reputation), it doesn't seem like the Valenti as any downside compare to Lull and Nordstrand...

Do you have any recommendation for me?

Is there something you think your valenti bass is missing?

I thought I'd post an excerpt from some comments I made over in the Alleva thread on various wood combinations. Representing Valenti over there! Despite being able to use some extra cash right now, there is nooooo way I can get rid of this bass. I've tried... even my wife said, "Don't sell it!" Listing a digital SLR plus accessories here pretty soon, in case anyone's interested.

Anyhow, enjoy. . .

My current bass is a Valenti 5: alder/maple/Sadowsky pre/Nordstrand 70's wind singles in 70's position. For my tone preferences, this thing is IT. I think I prefer it for the exact reason that Ken doesn't - it lacks that upper mid "gank" as he decribes it, and has more polite growl than aggressive grind.

It's the perfect combination of warm, round low end and punch, with some serious growl, and plenty of high end sizzle. It's a very unique voice with the 70's spacing, which I can really hear when soloing up high, slapping, or just digging in.

I think my problem has always been that the 60's placement was a bit too round, and big down low for me - or maybe not enough definition to the notes is a better way to describe it. I love the 70's ash/maple (heavy ash) tone for slap... LOVE IT. But the fingerstyle tone was always a bit too grindy for my taste. With alder/rosewood, the tone was great for a few sets, with brand new stainless strings, but it never had quite enough bite for me.

Enter the early 70's spec. It just happens to work perfectly for me. As Joe said, a bastard child, but adopted by moi.

I also believe it has a lot to do with my fingers and attack. A friend of mine at church who also owned a Valenti for a while has 'harsher' fingers than I do. We can pick up the same bass, EQ'ed the same way, same amp, etc... and when I play fingerstyle it always sounds a bit bigger, warmer - when he plays it's always got a bit more edge and bite.

I now get weekly, effusive praise from our sound guy and guitarist, both of whom have run sound for every big act who's ever come through here (Vic Wooten, Mayer, and so forth). Direct into a Countryman DI and to the board. Every week it's, "Man! I can't believe how good that bass sounds!"

Of all the Fodera's, Sadowsky's, AC's, etc... that I've paraded in front of them over the years, that says an awful lot.

I'm curious about how Ken responded to that. As far as I can see, he has not taken the bait at all on Valenti love.
