The Epiphone Rivoli was much more popular in the UK. I owned an EB2. Then I bought a used Fender P in January 68. After one rehearsal with the Precision the Gibson felt like a plank. I never played it again.

Yeah the Gibsons/Epiphones had a unique sound.
I can one up you though, 1965 I bought a used Mosrite Ventures model bass. Thought it was so cool. Then a friend came over with 65 precision. Played them both through my blackface 64 Fender Bassman. Enough said.

i started playing in the 60s and apart from a small blip during the punk years 76-78 when i only changed style not gear,i have generaly been able to find my tone on my ever changing lineup of gear.like many have said on this thread i have no use for a tweeter,keep the treble right back,use flats(dead or silk wound if poss)and keep it simple.(simple is good for me as i am not a very good or technical player).i play all kinds of music and folks either like my 60s tone or they can find someone else.if you take the time to listen to your fave 60s bassist even with the most modern gear you will be able to dail in something approaching the sound you want.good luck and sorry for my ramble.
