The Walnut Rick Club

So today we were celebrating for Twangster101 on the occasion of the arrival of his new 4003W. Seems like there are more than a couple of us walnut Rick owners, so why not start a club, right?! In honor of his NBD, I'm giving him #1, and taking #2 for myself. Doesn't have to be a new 4003 - if you've got a walnut Rick of any kind, you're cordially invited!

I've got one of the ORIGINAL Walnut Rick basses, the 4004C Cheyenne. Bassically (), it is the same wood/color scheme as the "new" 4003SW, but even lighter and more comfortable. The humbucking pickups are sweet. Ric5 did a vol/vol/tone mod to it back in 2004. I've sold off most of my basses, but this one is a keeper.

Very pretty. I've yet to actually see a Cheyenne or Laredo in person, much less actually play one.

Yes, that is indeed a keeper. I have a 4003W and a 4003SW on order, an early 4004 Cheyenne is on my Bass bucket list.

And... I'd love to have a number.

That happens. I was putting money aside for an Ampeg SVT Heritage and the 4003SW proved irresistible, the Ampeg can wait. I already have a SVT 3 Pro as seen behind it in the second photo, so I'm okay.

This is what my incoming 4003W is replacing... I made a trade based on my lust for the more "classic" Ric twang and bite, as well as the beauty of the W version of the 4003 (which I've been drooling for ever since I saw the first spy photos of one). The HB1s in the 4004 are great pickups, but they just weren't the classic single-coil sound I need, even after a switch to a .022 Sprague cap and a 500k tone pot... I'm going to miss that 7.5 pound weight, though!

That's a pretty bass you gave up. The 4003Ws aren't too bad in regards to weight, though. Mine is 8.6 pounds, and most of the reported weights I've seen are around the same. Definitely better than my Peaveys - the lightest of the bunch is more than 11 pounds.

I like the Lemmification stars......soundwise,you were halfway there with the new pots,and Sprague cap. if you add coil taps,the HB's put out an 8k sound VERY similar to the older higains.

And my 4004 replacing my 4003W should be here this week. As much as I love the 4003w sound and feel, I missed contours and always found myself looking at humbucking pickups. Plus I've had gas for one of the older 4004's since I played one on my honeymoon years ago.

It will likely undergo de-Lemmification.

Off topic but nice tuba! I play bass and tuba as well, is that an alexander, they are the best around!

Thanks! It's a Meister Gerhard Schneider, which was a brand made by B&S in East Germany for export back in the 60s/70s. Mine is about 40 years old or so, but B&S still sells the same horn under its own name now: Invalid Link Removed Only differences between mine and the new ones is that mine has a silver garland on the bell and had noisy S-links on the rotors that I've since replaced, and I paid a *whole* lot less for mine than a new one. It's got a nice tone and speaks pretty easily - I hadn't picked up a tuba in about 20 years but was able to get up to the D above the staff without any problems at all the day it arrived.

Cool I've played a newer one. Mines a 63. The newer Alex's' have nothing on the old, they even took off the fancy engravings!
