The way bass "should" sound

It's sacrilege to some, but as a more or less dedicated pickstyle player these days I absolutely love Nate Converge's tone - especially the seething grunt he dialed in on this record:

If you've ever heard anyone playing a Ken Smith, that is the sound for me. Tight bottom, smooth miss and highs and slightly compressed, bright yet not harsh. John Patitucci on his earlier albums, for example.
