The uber wealthy was behind all of it. The reality is big wealth is government. Taking a commodities player out of the market led to bigger wealth for those with an alternative. Making weed/cannabis illegal expanded the power of the government over the people.
It was not a racist movement, but racism was used as a tool to push it through. Much of the racism theories on the weed grab were actually based and used in the criminalization of cocaine not weed.
Yes, they changed the name to something scary, whether the name existed before is irrelevant. It is not the name people knew and associated with the commodity. I have read it was this move and the ignorance of the masses that let it happen. A very disturbing pattern that repeats over and over.
