The answer to this is always going to be James Jamerson during his lifetime. The lack of credit is appalling.

Great as he is, I don't think of him as a Rock bassist. He is squarely in the Motown/soul/jazz category. I doubt he would have called himself a rock player. Just my humble opinion.

Yes indeed when I see people say Roger Waters is "underrated" as a bass player my first thought is always, you mean David Gilmour?

I heartily agree. however, Bouree was originally recorded on the "standup" album while Glen Cornick was the bassist. I checked and the original version had the full baseline and solo as it is played on subsequent versions. but I take nothing away from Hammond.....

In other words Jethro Tull had more than 1 great bassist who is underrated.

I think another underrated bassist, who also did time with Jethro Tull is Dave Pegg (with Tull from 79-95) who was also a member of the great Fairport Convention from 1969.

Bruce Thomas is a great choice--a really outstanding player who hardly ever gets talked about.

Yes. I like his bass playing much more than his guitar playing.

Also Colin Moulding from XTC.

+1 on Colin Moulding and Bruce Thomas - both did great jobs of playing to the song, and Moulding also brought a taste for counterpoint that was unique.
