And, while I love Chicago, my reverence for Cetera changed a bit when I heard somewhere that he only played bass out of necessity and not love for the instrument. That’s just my bias getting in the way though....

Sure, but John Entwistle is/was anything but underrated. If anything, he's one of the most widely-regarded and beloved bass players in the history of rock.

Has appeared on nearly everything you've ever heard (that wasn't played by Lee Sklar)!
In fact, the session players get no love at all other than from producers, and other bass players.

Also, Stephen Amazing of UPP, Clive Chaman, and Prakash John.

Michael Anthony! Mike Dirnt! Jon Stockman!

The answer to this is always going to be James Jamerson during his lifetime. The lack of credit is appalling.

Maybe among casual music listeners, but among serious music fans, and certainly among bass players, he is anything but underrated. He's a legend, and rightly so.

Michael Anthony terrific. As great a bassist as he is, his vocals really held Van Halen together. Mike Dirnt just an incredibly solid punk rocker. Underrated as in not a show off. One of my favs though
