Interesting. I've always felt like he was quite highly regarded amongst rock players. Deservedly so, IMO.

My nomination for most underrated is Peter Cetera of Chicago. Beast of a player, and seems often overlooked.

I'd agree. It seems like, at least rock players who know a thing or two about music do appreciate Deacon. Cetera, in the heyday of Chicago, before they turned into cheesy lite-rock, was damn good. There's parts of Chicago V that sound like prog rock.

Great as he is, I don't think of him as a Rock bassist. He is squarely in the Motown/soul/jazz category. I doubt he would have called himself a rock player. Just my humble opinion.

Yeah he totally isn't. I missed that rock bit.

Great list. I’m not familiar with Djvas or PFM. Fielder back in the day was critically acclaimed ( Downbeat Magazine), Holt was awesome (Check out the FM Live LP), one of my all time favorites.

Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM for short) is a progressive band from Milan, Italy. The first band in their country to use a Moog. They collaborated with Pete Sinfield who supplied English lyrics in an attempt to broaden their audience. They had to learn to sing them phonetically because only Mauro Pagani spoke English. He left the band to go solo in '75 or '76. Patrick Djivas is their second bassist (joining in 1974) and currently is still in the lineup. The only original member is drummer/singer Franz DiCioccio.
