Terry Lewis - Accolades as a producer, not as much as a bass player.
Dexter Redding - Without Dexter, Leslie Claypool would be very, very boring...
Phil Lynott - Much is said about him as a songwriter and frontman. His bass playing was always badass (and for the song!)

Is that the same Joe Puerta that played in The Range with Bruce Hornsby? If so, I second that nomination.
Wayne MacKenzie - Wolfstone. Absolute beast, and no one knows about him because Wolfstone is a Scottish trad/rock band.
John Edward Illsley. Have never seen his name mentioned on Talkbass. Perhaps the Dire Straits were not big in the states which most of talkbass members are from, i presume.
Based on him being mentioned several times in this thread, this will be an unpopular opinion here, but I think Michael Anthony is just awful. Saw him years ago on "Live Without a Net" and his bass solo...truly the worst. Just a drunk beating on his bass staggering around the stage.
After he joined Chickenfoot, I read an interview where he said basically "Eddie told me what to play and when to play it", so I thought maybe I'd change my opinion of him. Then saw him live with Chickenfoot, and he was still still just as terrible.
Granted, he can take his good/bad/otherwise to the bank, because he's made a nice living doing it.
Just my $.02 worth.
However, if he's not on this list, Dave LaRue should be because until I saw him a couple of years ago with Steve Morse, I'd never heard of him. The man was a beast! He outclassed Morse by a mile.

Thats a good one too. I have almost every Dire Straits album and they were pretty popular here as well. Good point though, not sure why he doesn't get mentioned.
Under rated by who? Their peers, or the audience. Two very different situations.
If you’re in a multi-million selling band, you’re not underrated imo. Obviously the bassist isn’t gonna be the most popular member in most cases, but eh. There are amazing musicians who have never been on radio, I’d consider them underrated.
I’m glad Bruce Thomas is getting some love here. He is so dang good. His signature bass from Bass Centre is really fantastic too!
Also performed and recorded with Crazy Backwards Alphabet, fwap, Zazen, and The Mistakes.
The ox is not really underrated though.
John Entwistle wasn't bad.
As a matter of fact, he was one of Chris Squires influences.
Jeff Ament... isn't he the guy who mostly plays fretless except when he's playing 8 string? I've always liked his playing.
I had an opportunity to get his gig in PJ before they were anyone, many many years ago when I was a teenager.... alas I turned down something that sounded typically blown up and made up and unlikely to actually pan out. Of course, that was the one that would have gone somewhere. Although who knows, if they had me on bass they probably would have imploded in a burning haze of nothingness.

Curt Smith (1/2 of Tears for Fears) has dropped amazing lines. Check out the album "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending," the bass work on that album is exquisite. Just the right notes with the right tone at the right times. Holding down the frame, supporting everything but still has individualistic instrumental value with the bass as a stand alone component.
