imagine one sees an item offered for sale and notices that, not only is it missing a crucial part, but it is also offered at twice the cost of a brand new item from a major online retailer.

does one politely point out, strictly in a helpful, informative manner, that the item offered used is readily available new at a cheaper price, or does one simply turn their pretty head and walk away?

That means The Wife wants it sold and seller does not want to sell it so he puts a very high (this will never sell for this) price. Then after a few months he says, "I tried to sell it but no one wanted it." and he keeps it.

Just walk away.

If you point out an unreasonable asking price in hopes you will get it for a realistic price, forget it. Once you insult the seller’s pricing, they will never sell it you anyway.

If it’s something you want, approach it from that POV and just evaluate the item and make an honest offer. Don’t swoop in trying to correct the seller’s misconceptions about pricing.

the item is $15. at sweetwater. i don't want it. i simply feel sorry that he will be so unsuccessful (or sorry that the buyer will pay twice the new price for an incomplete used item.)

There’s literally dozens of these types of listings in the classifieds at any given moment. It can be really hard not to send a pm sometimes just pointing out the absurdity of it, but then I remember people are allowed to attach any price they want to anything they’re selling.
