Things I've Learned On Talkbass

Compressors: the embodiment of good vs. evil that has plagued mankind for since the inception of recorded / live music. IOW, I don't think it was a topic of debate amongst Gregorian monks.

Ohmage: to the point and readily identified on any enclosure by even the greenest of novices.

Riis's Rule of All Things Mechanical / Electrical: Stuff that is truly broken does not repair itself.

Used Basses for Sale: no matter what the brand, price, or condition, the instrument is undoubtedly the best the seller has ever played.

Riis's Rule of 10 (as it applies to local musicians I've worked with): Any positive claims, divide by 10 to get the true number. Any negative experiences, multiply by 10 to get a feel for the full impact (based on a claim of "...oh, he only drinks a little").

Most importantly, I've learned there's a lot of talented & helpful folks here on TalkBass and surrounding yourself with those-in-the-know is the key to success.

I have learned, and just recently I might add, that bass players here at TB cannot discern how an audience might perceive the difference between Eddie Vedder wearing shorts on stage, and a middle aged, balding, chubby dude in a ball cap, playing covers, wearing shorts on stage.

For the record, I am a middle aged, chubby, bald man and so speak from experience. Though, I would never wear shorts on stage, unless I was the roady. :D

Things I've learned:
1. Slap bass is hated by many.
2. Nice coffee tables and boutique basses look alike.
3. That a cult can make people "Fearful" to speak against it.
4. The words Evilbay and Feebay for ebay
5. Some people like cabs w/o a tweeter.
6. Chop thread + photo shop = laughs.
7. There is an unspoken racial divide on TB that rears its ugly head on more occasions than it should and most of the time the perps are clueless.

- If you anchor your thumb, you're a stupid idiot.

I anchor my thumb.

Me too.

Don't forget our long gone (as in banned) TB buddy, sound guru Bill Fitzmaurce and "cross-envelope" filtering caused by not stacking your identical cabs vertically and the discussions therein.

Rants against tabs even though TB has a tab forum.

Lownered

So many TBr's with bad backs switching from their much loved tube amps to 3lb micro SS amps and 30lb neo-speaker cabs.

Questioning how the world works because of the "dum" CL add thread along with threads like "Stupidest thing I heard" at a gig, rehearsal, audition, life in general.

All the cool people that have pm'd me about stuff. :)

All the tribes(clubs) formed on TB.

1. A lot of people don't use the search function.
2. A lot of people can't/won't spell or punctuate correctly.
3. A lot of people say things in disagreements/arguments on this forum that they would never say to someone face to face.
4. A lot of us a very passionate about bass playing and all things bass related and we are fortunate to have this place even if our human shortcomings make it difficult at times.

How can a man with "llama" right in his own last name misspell llama? :D

I agree some people can't/won't spell or punctuate correctly, however, more often its a typing error. The computer has made us lazy; and we all think we can type at a thousand words a second. If you learn to proofread your posts this will diminish.

Well I don't know; a lot about the bass.

I spent the last hour this morning reading through this thread. Its been the most entertaining morning I've had in a long time. Almost all I've learned on TB was contained in threads other than this one, except how to BUMP.:smug:

Unless I missed it, I don't think there was much mention of tubes vs. solid state in this thread. That's another way to quickly stir up a thread.

I learned that old heavy all tube amps are the only way to get great tone.
... unless you have one of the new SS amps that simulate tube tone
... but "tube tone" is I think what TC Electonics calls their tube sound simulator, and they are no good because they overstate their power rating. Or do they?
... or unless you have a really good hybrid amp with a tube in the preamp section ... but they aren't really the same as an all tube amp
... or unless you have a VT Bass pedal

... but maybe I'm digressing.

But seriously I have learned a lot on TB. And some of it is actually useful in real life bass playing / giging situations.

What I've learned here on TB;

* I thought I was a decent player but after seeing/hearing some of you I now know I am basically average.

* There are many nice, helpful people who will answer your questions as long as you don't come off like a complete jerk or start attacking/arguing with the answers you get.

* When you're posting about problems in your band, sooner or later someone will tell you to step back and take a look at yourself. And they're usually right.

* When you are asking about a bass, cab, amp, whatever, sooner or later someone will show up and tell you it's junk unless it's what they have, then there's nothing better out there.

* Some questions have no answer (flats or rounds?), but they keep getting asked.

* The search function is not nearly as easy to use as you'd think, and you may not find your answer there so it can be frustrating when you get the "do a search" response.

* You can find some pretty good deals in the Classified section if you know what you want.

* Most everyone has a good sense of humor and is willing to help out if they can (unlike many other forums).

That bassists get dissed and are the butt of a lot of jokes from non-bassists. I seriously did not know that until I joined Talkbass. I grew up on '70s funk, where bassists were the foundation of the music. We were more likely to know, respect, and emulate the bassists of our favorite bands than any other players. When I started hearing about how underappreciated bassists are, I was thinking, "Where is this coming from?"
