Things I've Learned On Talkbass

1. A lot of people don't use the search function.
2. A lot of people can't/won't spell or punctuate correctly.
3. A lot of people say things in disagreements/arguments on this forum that they would never say to someone face to face.
4. A lot of us a very passionate about bass playing and all things bass related and we are fortunate to have this place even if our human shortcomings make it difficult at times.

Correct sir.

Hmm, yeah that seems about right - oh, and 15s Rule!!! :D

If you name any brand of bass or amp there are people who will swear to you that it's the best there is and everything else sucks in comparison.

There is almost no statement that you can make that someone can't find an argument for.

One man's dream rig is another man's Craig's list material.

Jimmy M likes Ampegs

Some folks come to the forum to learn, some come to demonstrate what they know.

Some come to argue, some to look for the answer to an argument.

Some come just to tell everyone that they should do a search. (Almost everything's already been discussed so if this was strictly followed there would be little use for a forum.)

Some come to try to convince others to like what they like.

Some come to sell but pretend like it just happened to come up in their post.

Some come to pitch a specific brand and pretend like they aren't connected with the company.

Some come to see who they can correct.

Some (maybe all) come to dream.

A good way to start an argument is:
To ask if the body wood affects the tone.
To ask if it's OK to play two different types of cabinets (or different size speakers) at the same time.
To ask why every one likes _______ basses (fill in a brand name) when you don't think they are very good
To ask any question that involves the government (see recent Gibson/exotic wood issues)
To ask which is better - flats or rounds
To hate on any brand
To question Ampeg amps or Fender basses
To mention the word Rickenbacker without a worshipful tone
To say a brand is overpriced.

I played bass in a bluegrass band in the '90's. We were hired to play at the annual Wisconsin Laama Convention, held in Stevens Point, WI one year.

Did I mention that Laama breeders might be the strangest subculture I have ever been exposed to? I don't care how much you might think you know about laamas, you don't know nothin'.

In the five or so years I have been here, I have learned the following;
-how to empty my wallet of all available funds
-quantity over quality almost all the time
-I must be luckier then I thought, because I'm a bass player and not only did I have a girlfriend, I ended up getting married!
-how to buy in to other's enthusiasm, only to be deeply disappointed in the result
-how to ignore some so called "experts" as their opinion changes so quickly on what's good, better or great
-there are some pretty cool people here and there are some who I have to wonder how they are going to make it through life
-Carrots are great, raw, cooked or otherwise!

Never ever talk negatively about a P-Bass, MM SR or Ric. Avoid threads concerning bass cab technology and science. Trolls exist but not in the form you'd expect. TB will give you G.A.S. Keep your speaker size choice to yourself. Best Forum out there IMO for bassists.

I've learned that if you want to start a discussion, this may not be the place the search police are not kind to newbies who want to ask questions in real time.
I've also learned that everybody has an opinion and to them opinion=truth. I've have also learned that when it comes down to gear, sounds, technique or anything else a thousand years of experience will not change a persons opinion if they are not equipped with an open mind. Oh and one more thing sx rules fender is overrated and ampeg=orgasmic. Jk lol....

That's an unofficial word, though. It is not included in the list of TB Slang in the FAQs section... though it should be.

What about jerk singers, though? Do they have a similar term? Like "stingers", "singholes", "singjerks" or something?

+1 for singhole. "Guitard" was the funniest thing I had heard until "singhole."

One general consensus I have seen over and over again in the amps forums and is very looked down upon on here is the fact you should never never neverrrrrrrrrrr ever ever everrrrrrrrr mix a 4x10 cabinet with a 1x15 cabinet! :hiding:

I have learned that, some rare exemptions left out, TB is by far the nicest forum in the WWW I have got to know.

While some negative aspects are inherent to a forum (search-advice, fanatic tendencies ;) ) it still comes in a mellow and humorous way not to be seen elsewhere to often.

For every single bad comment, there are at least 3 funny/informative/nice ones to compensate it :)
