Things I've Learned On Talkbass

If I'm talking about economics, it doesn't mean I'm talking about politics. That was my point. Just because they're related means nothing. Economics can exist far outside of politics. And business has no default or implied association with politics.

I would say that business, especially big business has a lot to do with politics. Yes, youre right, economics and/or business can be talked about outside the realm politics, by some. Sooner, rather than later, politics will be brought up by someone, and this is why the mods closely watch those threads. Ive seen it myself, and the mods have seen it even more, Im sure.

The Diva...

Right. But that could be any member, no? A jerk guitarist, a jerk drummer, a jerk singer... hey, even a jerk Bassist can be a Diva.

But "guitard" is very specific for dudes who claim to play a guitar. There should be, IMHO, IOW, FYI and YMMV, a specific term for jerk singers. And one for jerk drummers, now that we're at it.

I'd not ask for one for jerk bassists since, well, we all are bassists here (or almost all).

Yrah I was kinda half-joking. Since the singer usually gets portrayed as the group diva/insecure dbag here on Talkbass. :p Never played with a diva myself, allthough some have been kind of weird dudes.

Things I've learned on Talkbass:

- People who don't read music and people who do rarely agree on the topic of reading music.

- A substantial number of Americans are sensitive about trade with China. TB members from other places are less so.

- A lot of people know very little about music theory, but it doesn't stop them from talking about it at great length, or occasionally dishing out snark to those who have multiple degrees in it.

- Any thread on a female bassist will inevitably include either an innuendo or an outright blatant remark about her physical appearance.

- The number of weenies here < the number of nice folks here. (Hey, if you think there's a lot of BS here, try Gearslutz sometime.)

Heh. I've heard 'singtard,' 'drumtard,' 'keytard,' and the ever-popular 'basstard' for those jerks on instruments other than guitar.

On Talkbass, I've learned about all sorts of basses I had never heard of before joining in here. And, yes, have gotten GAS as well. But that means that in addition to the two Fenders (1 Jazz and 1 P) and two Ibbys, I now own both 4 and 5 string Ministar Basstars, and thanks to GAS's twin, DAS, have two Dingwalls. And now am DASing for a Dingwall Super P. Sigh.

I have learned about what types of effects do what to your sound, and also learned that various different bassists describe those sounds differently. (grind vs. Dirt vs. Growl etc.)

I have learned that it's a good thing I have developed over the years a fairly think skin and how to ignore folks who are being jerks, and remind myself you've got to expect occasional rudeness on the interwebs.

And while some people here may complain about how fast and how hard the mods here may stomp on potential trouble, after some of the flame wars I have seen on other forums, I am grateful the mods here believe in being proactive. And yes, I've had a few warnings myself, although never pushed anything far enough to result in my being banned.

I've learned that a lot of people come here looking for agreement or support from others to assuage their music-related insecurities, particularly regarding gear and drama with bandmates. :hmm:

And my question about the best carrots for metal has gotten a few different answers, leaving me as confused as ever. That's something else I've learned...rarely does a question here have one definitive answer. But this board is about music, not mathematics, so I suppose that should be expected. ;)

I've learned that top level bass professionals, especially those who hold strong opinions about the craft, are sometimes made to feel unwelcome in the forum. I may not always agree with them, but I miss them anyway. (J*** B***** anyone?)

Can you imagine what would happen if John Paul Jones came on the forum and said that playing with a pick was better than fingers?

Many are far better players when having a discussion on Talkbass than when actually playing.

Fender is a far more polarizing brand than I ever imagined.

People seem to love to ask questions that they already know the answer to. I guess it's an affirmation thing.
