Things I've Learned On Talkbass

If you name any brand of bass or amp there are people who will swear to you that it's the best there is and everything else sucks in comparison.

There is almost no statement that you can make that someone can't find an argument for.

One man's dream rig is another man's Craig's list material.

Jimmy M likes Ampegs

Some folks come to the forum to learn, some come to demonstrate what they know.

Some come to argue, some to look for the answer to an argument.

Some come just to tell everyone that they should do a search. (Almost everything's already been discussed so if this was strictly followed there would be little use for a forum.)

Some come to try to convince others to like what they like.

Some come to sell but pretend like it just happened to come up in their post.

Some come to pitch a specific brand and pretend like they aren't connected with the company.

Some come to see who they can correct.

Some (maybe all) come to dream.

A good way to start an argument is:
To ask if the body wood affects the tone.
To ask if it's OK to play two different types of cabinets (or different size speakers) at the same time.
To ask why every one likes _______ basses (fill in a brand name) when you don't think they are very good
To ask any question that involves the government (see recent Gibson/exotic wood issues)
To ask which is better - flats or rounds
To hate on any brand
To question Ampeg amps or Fender basses
To mention the word Rickenbacker without a worshipful tone
To say a brand is overpriced.

My sediments almost exactly.....:D

So what the OP is saying is that he's learned that this web forum, like any other, is all EGO, EGO, EGO hidden behind the anonynimity of the world wide web.

we are in a competitive business, not talking about bands, im talking about bass players. if youre a notch or two above where i am, and i have an oppourtunity to snatch your gig away from you or take your spot in an up-and-coming band, i WILL do just that. it's not as hard as some people think.

And there you go...

There is no way you could snatch my gig away from me, not even if youre a much better player than I am. I have faith in that, fo show.

If you'd like to come out to SoCal and give it a try youre more than welcome to. I'll even put you up for a night and buy you a beer.

If all you see is competitiveness in life then be prepared for an unhappy existence, you cant always be on top.

idk..maybe its only a competitive biz in my area. we're home to one of the biggest music festivals on earth. when i was starting out, mosts bassists here weren't willing to teach younger musicians anything. so we developed an "underdog" mentality. you either go hard or go home. and im having waaay too much fun to go home. as far as "gigs", 200 + a year, its my main income at the moment. guys like me are always in line for a promotion is all im saying

It has been my experience that it's a competitive biz in lots of places.

Perfect example of rule #6 - "Some come to argue..."
