Things I've Learned On Talkbass

we are in a competitive business, not talking about bands, im talking about bass players. if youre a notch or two above where i am, and i have an oppourtunity to snatch your gig away from you or take your spot in an up-and-coming band, i WILL do just that. it's not as hard as some people think.

Oh, if only I could list all the things I learned from him...

Perfect example of rule #6 - "Some come to argue..."

I'd hardly see my post as argumentative, but if you do then perhaps the jocular intent of my post was misconstrued...

no skin off my back, exept for that mole I just piked at

HAHA!

Some come to see who they can correct.

Too true!

We're not supposed to advertise in our posts (although you can in the signature). So people pretend to be interested in someone else's post and then drop a "hint". It goes something like:
"Oh, you have a nice Fender there. I have a G&L which is kind of like a Fender which unfortunately I'm going to have to sell. PM me if interested."

- That some come to learn, others to demonstrate what they know... yet some others do both... (paraphrasing the OP)

- [DEL]That many discussions have been overdone to death (case in point: the "fingerstyle vs pick playing" issue)[/DEL] EDIT: Someone else beat me to it

- That even musicians can become obsessed with smilies and use them to death

- [DEL]That most people here are annoyed by now by someone (especially a noob) asking for the "best whatever to do whatnot"... i.e. "what is the best bass for metal"[/DEL] EDIT: someone else beat me to it, AGAIN

- That it is TOUGH to be a newbie on Talkbass, because most of your newbie questions will certainly annoy someone (or someones).

- EDIT: That someone on Talkbass will beat you to at least one idea, especially if it's about carrots, Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Rush/ Geddy Lee, the best bass for metalz, and the "picking on bass is the work of the devil" thang.

On a personal level:

- I learned just how hard it is to become a studio musician. However, even with that, and starting as late as I did, it doesn't detracts me from making that a potential future career.

- I started to hear some jazz, and got a few good recommendations by members

What I've learned on here?

That it's the Internet and take it all with a grain of salt.
It's got a few people who vomit their opinion on everything and want you to believe its the gospel.
It's the Internet.
It gives the power to voiceless people.
It's the Internet.
That the search function is really just taking up space.
It's the Internet.
It gives me a constant source of gear gas!
It's the Internet.
And shortly I'm sure one of the knowledgable folks I mentioned a few lines up will be along to tell me I'm wrong and set me straight.
Did I mention it causes me GAS?

Things I've learned from talkbass

If you post a question then you will be told to use the search engine.

If you use the search then you will be made fun of for ressurecting an old thread.

If you ask an unpopular question then people will say troll.

Some people hate Rickenbackers and some love them.

Some people hate Fenders and some love them.

We will never know which is better ... the p-bass or the jazz.

The first heavy metal song was written by Paul McCartney and the best bass for metal is a Hofner strung with flats.

:bassist::hyper:

I've learned that if someone has a serious question and they word it in a non-argumentive manner, there are a lot of great folks on here who are more than willing to help. If you are one of those people, you are what makes Talkbass strong and viable.

Things I haven't totally learned yet, but am trying:
I still haven't learned to stop laughing when people say things that make no sense to me. Currently the #1 thing that cracks me up is when guys post sound clips of their new bass and it's totally saturated distortion and could literally be any bass on earth - there's no way to tell what brand it is or even if it's a hollow body or solid body with that much distortion going on.

And here it is on the bridge pickup: Bzzzz bzzzzz bzzzzzzzz.
And here it is on the neck pickup: Bzzzz bzzzzz bzzzzzz.
And now both pickups....
