That seems like something you're personally projecting onto what you're reading. I haven't witnessed anyone stating anyone elses' band preference sucks, nor has anyone announced imminent bowel-vacating due to musical tastes-- again, this is something you're projecting merely because you don't agree with someone chiming in their opposing viewpoint.

My dad loved Elvis. He and his friends would have a few (more than a few) drinks and then one of them would start singing, "I'm all shook up". Then they would start laughing and couldn't stop. Great fun.

I prescribe the motion picture "Rock Around The Clock" for a good example of how brand identification was employed to market rock 'n' roll. And yeah, being 6'1" tall a better sign I am getting old I think is that I can no longer place my hands palms down on the floor while standing. I should probably work on that.

So I write a post just for fun, a little nostalgia, and to get some good natured rapport going.
There will always be a few that say 'How dare she say that, or why live in an imperfect past'.
Like they are looking for a big bowl of granola to crap in.
Even I don't believe everything I write, sometimes I just want to stray from 'What's 8 ohms plus 8ohms' for a minute.
For the people who didn't get the entertainment intended. I do not sit around remeniscing, I don't have rose colored glasses on, and not ALL the good music was written last century. And Santa Claus is not real, but it's fun to pretend he is.
Most of you got it. Bravo, you're probably fun to be around.

Although some of the Boomer vs. Millennial controversy points mentioned here in this thread might be worth examining somewhere (I'm a Boomer with Millennial offspring myself so I'm well aquatinted with it), I concur with your statement that the original intent was to have some fun with how much things have changed. I had a bit of fun coming up with my own list (post #34) and it was joyful going down memory lane a bit. But then again, this is TB and there is always somebody waiting the lurch to say something snooty.

As a Boomer myself, I am so utterly and completely sick of this rose-colored glasses view of yesteryear. My generation is so full of themselves, it's incredible.

I think this post went south with the phrase, "How come we made the best music of the century?" I think without that, this thread would have been interpreted as the harmless little lark Paula intended. Seen Paula's posts for a couple years now, she seems like a good and decent person without any ill intentions, and she's justifiably proud of what she's done in her life. But man, that little phrase, for all this post's good intentions, makes the whole post come across as one of those "You kids suck, we were so much better than you" posts that we see so often on here. Sorry but it does. Maybe if it had been phrased like, "How come we were able to make such good music?" without the element of putting down the other music people made in the century, it would have been better received.

Just my opinion on it.

In the '70's we learned songs from the radio or cassette, we had no internet or sheet music (that we could afford). When trying to learn Shining Star by EW&F we listened to the cassette until it broke....could never make out some of the words. Best we could come up with was "pull the pants off of the sun". The drugs weren't better back then, either. Mostly shake and leaves.

LOL Me and my 16-year old homies couldn’t make out all the lyrics for Imminent Front on our old radio (on an FM station 100 miles away), so we finally collectively figured they were saying “Livin In The Funk”... may have been the ganja talking

We used coiled cords. didn't obsess about gear size and weight--the bigger, the better. We would desecrate basses that would now be considered vintage to modify them, and sell pre-CBS Fenders and German Hofners in the newspaper classified ads for a few hundred bucks.

Seriously! Thanks for providing some light hearted humor. Sorry there's always someone who seems more interested in dragging things down. Makes TB a bit less appealing.

Sorry can't even find an image of them on the net. Coffee Can lighting. We took 4 coffee cans, painted them black, affixed them to a piece of wood, insert sockets, in parallel, screw in colored spot lights that were sold (in think they still sell them). Our singer constructed a control box. Was an ingenious kinda guy. We had 8 spots total (4 each side), hot hot hot, but we were the naz, with a lighted stage.

I took one coffee can with the bottom on, and one with both ends removed, fastened them together end-to-end for a longer tube. Made them more directional.

The 150 Watt colored incandescent spot bulbs I used are no longer available.

I finally trashed them a couple of years ago.

The situation you've described is a false equivalency to what's actually going on in this thread. To get ultra-specific, my initial post was merely pointing out that personal opinions shouldn't be presented as facts, and are subject to debate if stated as such.

I don’t think anyone is trying to present anything here as hard “facts.” They’re joking around and reminiscing about “stuff.”

And I think most people here get that and can separate what’s obviously just opinions from presumed facts without the need to get “ultra-specific” about it like you seem to feel the need to. This isn’t a college lecture. Just a conversation over drinks. There won’t be any quiz that counts towards grades at the end.

Note: The party situation I described was a deliberate and over the top exaggeration to make the key point in the bit of netiquette I cited glaringly obvious. It’s a common technique used in education. Something I thought you’d understand for what it was. I was not trying to draw a false equivalency.

Isn’t false equivalency when two things or sets share characteristic(s) with each other or a third thing or set, then the first two things are then falsely asserted to be equivalent?

As in:

(a) John is a politician.
(b) Bob is a politician - but he is also a criminal.
So (c) since both men are politicians, John must also be a criminal.

I didn’t say you were unwilling to listen. I don’t know where you got that idea because I can’t think of any reason why I would even think that. Is that an example of projecting?*

I did however imply you were being rather impolite in +1ing with the post calling an entire generation “full of itself.”

(*Out of curiosity, is “projecting” the buzzword of the day or something? It’s seems to getting tossed around fairly freely.)
