Things You Don't See Anymore Part 3

Wheelie bar..jpg

My Dad made me a set of wheelie bars after these came out. I never mastered riding on them. It was much easier to ride a wheelie without them. Although they did make a great place to mount the "Drag Bike Parachute" I had on my bike for a while!

Holy crap! I found it!

Originally I had it mounted to the back of the banana seat uprights. The holes in the back of the box was to blow the chute out. Most of he time it fell out and ended up wrapped around the back wheel! When I mounted it to the wheelie wheels it worked better as it was now a distance from the wheel! My chute was lime green!

While this old ad captures the essence of the bike I rode around Hyde Park, NY as a pre-teen, ‘ram’ handlebars and all...

there aren’t enough pixels on the internet to capture the Bizarre shade of ‘sparkle green’ I chose!!
My da was broken-hearted.
He wanted to buy me a Raleigh 10 speed...much like the one he grew up riding down the paths and the lanes of 1930s Ireland...but No, ‘cool’ ( maybe even bordering on ‘psychedelia’) was what 12 year old me held out for.

What a dumbass!!! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

This was what my beauty bike looked like. A purple Huffy Rail (since I got it at the W. T. Grant, it had a Grant badge on it). It was so low, long, and cool. It had a 5 speed gear shift but my dad went and tried to shift gears while it was sitting still and he stripped the gears and it was stuck in 5 gear forever. It was the hardest gear to pedal and I lived in a neighborhood with all hills.

My brother's bike had similar handlebars but they were taller, and had a more defined, longer loop in them. We called them "Bullwinkle Bars." (He used a translucent purple wrap on them...it took a bunch of rolls!)
