I remember seeing men carrying home beer in a pail or two from a saloon near my childhood home.

My stepfather grew up in the south end of Columbus and as a kid his parents used to send him to the local tavern, the “Hey-Hey,” to pick up a bucket of beer. There was no problem with a minor buying beer in those days - the 1930s.
The Hey-Hey was an old tavern then and I’m pretty sure it’s still in business today, unless COVID has done them in.

Edit: They are. Restaurant review: Hey Hey Bar and Grill

There's a surprisingly robust industry in, of all places, New York City, where a guy will mount one of those antiquated sharpening wheels in the back of an equally antiquated panel truck, and drive around ringing his bell like the ice cream man. Folks come running out to the street with all their kitchen knives in hand to flag him down, he pulls over to the curb, sharpens your knives for, I dunno, $20 each? and then drives on.

Dude is never around when I'm home! But I still see them periodically.
