It's an extension speaker volume control and cable. Back when most home systems were monaural, you could add an extension speaker in another room; with stereo, add 2, and control the volume coming from it/them.
Exactly…It’s a passive wired volume control or pot. I had a dual one so I could turn my stereo audio system up and down from my couch. If you had the main volume cranked and the “remote” volume turned down it would get warm. My friends were blown away!
They still sell similar passive volume controls.

Well we've all seen this before.
Marketing departments scheme to "dis-continue" a product and it gets elevated in the News making even more demand.
I'm not saying this is true but we'll see if there's not something brewing behind the scene.
Maybe a Mock-o Choco Taco with cheaper ingredients is in the works!
Remember the marketing geniuses at Coke!
