As a kid, I believe Kmart was the new kid in town where I lived. Big W was another, less well known (then) store.
I read Muntz also manufactured one of the 1st American sports cars. The Jet from 1949 to 1954.

My first computer course required punch cards. My Baseball simulation program was just about 1” less thick than that stack in the photo.
Times have changed!
But I am currently looking for some 3.5” diskettes for my older Korg synths, so even old tech can come back every so often.

I turned my decks in on the late shift, because they were big and low priority and picked them up in the morning. My problem was that if the program didnt run or converge, I lost another day

Next day?? LOOOXURY!! When I was in high school we had to walk ten blocks over to the university to find a station to punch our three inch stack of cards, then we brought them back to school for our teacher to add them to that week's batch, and then NEXT week we'd get our printouts ( ifn we wuz lucky, and our FORTRAN ran right!!)

Very nice. I have a few Ansonia clocks from about the same period.
I had three Corvairs, but all second-gen fully-independent-suspension (two 65 monzas, and a 66 coupe...) - none of those 'unsafe at any speed' first-gen solid-axle ones. BEST car for climbing up snowy hills...
My dad bought a used '60 Corvair for me and my mom to drive in '66. Slower than hell with four humans inside, but still a fun car. Just like this one...
Then at age 23 I got a nice red '67 coupe and had a ball driving it.

Shoppers World dept store grand opening, circa '62 in Chicago.
That same year Shoppers World opened one in my 'burb (Oak Lawn, IL). The night of the grand opening they had a helicopter drop a load of ping pong balls into the crowd in the parking lot. Some balls had a prize inside. A few folks got a $10 store gift certificate in their ball. That was real money back then! I was there, but didn't score one in the madness. Great fun anyway!

Don't know if this is true or not, but I remember an article from many years ago where (supposedly) an illiterate family that couldn't read bought a can of Crisco, thinking it was Fried Chicken, since that what the label showed.
Well, "it's digestible"...so at least there's that.
